Thread: What movie did you see today?

  1. #2131
Tenet — great premise and thrilling action, marred by Robert Pattinson's weirdness as well as the near-total lack of chemistry between John David Washington and everyone else. Elizabeth Debicki and Kenneth Branagh were great—in spite of Nolan.

Fatman — did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Flawed but fun. Walton Goggins is fantastic as always, and Billy Wenan as the sociopathic child villain did so well that it's almost a little concerning. It feels weird endorsing a movie with Gibson in it but he's right for the part.

Prom. Liberals poking just enough at their own pedantic behavior to make this Netflix production fun.
    Congratulations America

Sucks Free Guy got pushed back, was really looking forward to that.

I've heard nothing but horror stories from the batman set concerning Pattinson. But god damn I want that car!

    Saw this last night.

Felt a bit too clever for its own good. And a little hard to follow, but this was viewed through the lens of a bottle of wine. Will need a second viewing. And possibly a third, and a fourth. Some superb action sequences though, and the inverted replays of scenes already seen did indeed make for great viewing.

Agree with lack of chemistry from Washington - he was fairly wooden. Only discovered afterward he is Denzel's son - doesn't quite have the charisma of papa, at least in this outing.

It really made me feel like watching Predestination again though

Fully agree. I genuinely fell off, and didn't manage to reconnect once that had happened. Too much going on, and too much cleverness. Doubt I'll be seeing it again, like I did with Inception and the likes. Also have no idea what Nolan has against Dolby Atmos. All movies I've listened to with Atmos, have been pure bliss.

A movie I did watch and enjoyed to an extreme extent, was the Danish movie "Another round". Mads Mikkelsen, actor in Hannibal, Doctor Strange and villain in James Bond Casino Royale, is a freaking good actor. The Hunt from 2012, starring him as a main character as well, is also a must watch. Can't recommend them enough, and think everyone in this thread would enjoy them immensely.
Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?

    "My Octopus Teacher" on Netflix.

Justice League: Snyder Cut — one of the worst movies I've ever seen from an enjoyment-to-investment ratio standpoint

Con Air — still one of the most inadvertently American movies ever made

The Day the Earth Stood Still — Jaden Smith is the most effective movie-ruiner in Hollywood right now

    Spider-Man 3 — better than I remembered it being

    Independence Day: Resurgence — ditto?!?!

    The Amazing Spider-Man — still a snoozefest

    Deadpool 1 & 2 — still excellent

Logan — not worth a second viewing; the child actors suck.

    Nobody

Might not be the most glamorous genre, but def. among the very best movies in the genre I've ever seen.

If you consider nobody and john wick in the genre john wick is more fleshed out and technical in it's action sequences. Nobody was fun but it's so obviously a setup for a new franchise that the "mystery" of it came across as annoying by the end of the movie.

For sure, John Wick was incredibly stylish and had more polished action sequences, but Keanu doesn't really feel like a human being, and the main antagonist didn't really do it for me. Nobody feels like Office Space meets John Wick I hope it doesn't end up becoming a new franchise.

Godzilla vs. King Kong is a beautiful adventure movie (Team Kong) with a run-of-the-mill kaiju movie tacked on (Team Godzilla). If I ever get an opportunity to see it in IMAX, I will.

    Monster Hunter

70 minutes of tiresome Tencent garbage with 30 minutes of pretty decent TV fantasy tacked on at the end. Milla Jovovich is really the movie's only saving grace, and my wife's crush on her remains strong. She somehow makes the movie work, and even has decent chemistry with Tony Jaa. The most unrealistic scene is when she says something like "mmmm goood chocolate" and then takes out a bar of Hershey's which Tony Jaa eats and enjoys.

    Mortal Kombat.

A movie about the ultimate tournament to save earth realm and they forgot to include the tournament.

But they shoved in as many cheesey video game quotes as possible.

Just saw it and I was surprised... I really expected them to do something decent with this opportunity, and it turns out the trailers were better than the movie??! Kano, Sonya, Hanzo, and Kung Lao were okay I guess, but casting was, overall, really bad. The story sucked, most action sequences were so-so, even the CGI was bad. They shoulda rebooted Tekken or Street Fighter or something.

They've always had this weird hangup on the scorpion vs subzero thing, and that would have been fine as the plot to the movie but you don't actually see scorpion until the last 10 minutes which was...dumb.

Birds of Prey—and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Easily one of the best comic book movies ever made, solid from the opening scene right to the end of the credits (with the exception of just one genuinely bad super-cringe scene). Great cast; Margot Robbie is probably the best performer in the entire DC movie universe. Surprisingly good characterization even for the minor roles (esp. Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Crow Killer). No quibbles with the direction, the plot was straightforward but good, the action sequences were fun as hell, the soundtrack was on point. We just had a great time. Man it woulda been awesome to see this on the big screen. Dudes have been murdering the DC movies while the ladies behind this movie delivered the comic book movie to beat in the 2020s.

Gah that aspect of it was so frickin' annoying! Seeing a lot of positive reviews online and thinking most of the budget musta gone towards paying reviewers.

    The Paper Tigers

Disjointed, feels incomplete, but still enjoyable. Nostalgia, wish-fulfillment, decent martial arts. Kinda just have to go with it without any specific expectations.

    Wrath of Man

Passable heist & revenge thriller with awful, awful banter, just crappy lines in general. Doesn't feel like a Guy Ritchie movie, which is good in a way, but not really an enjoyable movie either. I guess it's good in some technical respects, and you can work with the unconventional pacing, but you don't really feel for the characters, the action isn't thrilling, everything just feels off. Way too much emphasis on guns for a Statham movie.

    Yes, Fantabulous indeed.

On another note, John Wick 1, 2, and 3, fight scene choreography is 10 times worse than the new TV show 'Equalizer' with Queen Latifa. Good thing they didn't give John much to say, less deadpanned lines from Keanu that way.

    Infinite

Cool—albeit derivative—idea, good production values, solid performance from Wahlberg... but ultimately kinda soulless, with subpar action, massive plot-holes, a lot of passing around the stupid stick, characteristically underwhelming performance from Chiwetel Ejiofor, occasionally very clunky dialogue, and every single potential twist is telegraphed around 1.6Km away. Passable, but I was disappointed with how little they managed to accomplish with the idea.

My wife and I went on our first date since before lockdowns started, which was pretty nice. Saw In The Heights. It was really nice - a positive, fun story that the world needed right now. We saw the show a decade or so ago and enjoyed it, so there weren't any real surprises. They did some fun things with the movie medium, though - the pool scene was amazing, as were some of the other tricks they did with choreography/cinematography.

I did note, however, a troubling lack of representation in the Washington Heights community - not a single Jew to be found!

(And before you NYCers get all uppity, yes, I know it's on the other side of Broadway.)
"When I meet God, I am going to ask him two questions: Why relativity? And why turbulence? I really believe he will have an answer for the first." - Werner Heisenberg (maybe)

The pool scene was a LOT of fun, and the subway scene was truly incredible. It was a very nicely done film adaptation - I had not ever seen the show before, so it was all a surprise for me.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

The tomorrow war. I just wished that someone had told me not to watch it. So I am telling you. It's everything a movie should not be.

It's Star Ship Troopers taking itself seriously.

All right now I've seen it and apart from executive producer Chris Pratt sucking harder than he's ever sucked, this was basically an average late '90s/early '00s scifi movie. From a plot perspective it was the equivalent of the final hour of the party when all you have left are the last dregs of a dozen mixers and spirits and you think, eh, what the hell. If you have time to waste (literally waste), it's all right, even though it's at least 20 minutes too long.

I can't believe you watched it. Especially since you didn't have the actual excuse of having traveled back to the 90s and accidentally have walked into a showing of it.
    Congratulations America

I dunno I mean if I'd been Kevin Feige I woulda gladly traded two Iron Men, one and a half Thors, an Avengers and a GotG for a couple of Black Widows and a Wanda Vision romcom.

I watched "Lady Snowblood" (1973) via the TCM hub on HBO Max. Didn't read any reviews first, I was just bored and wanted to watch something old and international. But by the end I realized the influence it had on Tarantino when he made "Kill Bill", and why so much of it felt familiar.

Might take a shot at "Lady Snowblood 2" (1974) just to see the comparisons.
