Thread: What movie did you see today?

  1. #391
I'm kinda looking forward to tha Captain America flick. If they do it right, it could be really cool. Of course, if they don't do it right, it could be absolutely awful.

    Pretty meh on Thor.

Saw Black Swan. It was pretty good, I liked the story line and the way her 'transformation' was done. If you plan to see it, watch out for some awkward sexual scenes

Despicable Me. It was pretty cute!

Sonny Boy, a dutch movie about a young black man from Surinam moving to The Netherlands in 1928, getting involved with a married white woman who has a child with him before her husband is willing to agree to a divorce so she can marry the black man. After initial problems they do quite well for themselves untill world war II. Even under the German occupation they aren't really bothered untill they are arrested for aiding jews. She dies in Ravensbruck, he dies on the Cap Arcona and the child survives. It's supposedly based on a true story, which is surprising if that's really true. I had no idea it was actually possible for a mixed race couple to have a more or less normal life at that time. Movie was a bit too slow and appeared to be one of those movies that's really intended to be remade into a mini-series for TV.

Then, Skyline, which was like seeing Cloverfield again, this time without the suspense though. Not really worth the money or time. Those of you who are doing movies on DVD etc; don't waste your time.
    Congratulations America

    I saw Summer Wars today.

Everyone here should go see it, and I really mean that.
    I enjoy blank walls.

Loft, a well made dutch whodoneit with hardly any unlikely plot twists about 5 guys sharing a love nest and the risks that that involves.
    Congratulations America

    [500] Days of Summer.

    Joseph Gordon-Leviitt and Zooey Deschanel.

Lovely movie. Raised many of the usual Rom Com, boy meets girl clichés and played with them, toyed with them.

Delightfully executed too. Lots of nice touches, which took your mind away from the fact that the plot was nothing special.

Gordon-Levitt is a hidden gem, he needs to be in more movies.
Deschanel playing the role she always plays, pretty and quirky, with those big, innocent blue eyes.

Loses a half point for the ending, which, while sweet, could have/should have been more poignant.

Is it really okay? I never have much faith in remakes, especially if the original movie was only so-so to begin with.

Not exactly today, but this weekend: Fido (very funny!), Ex-drummer, Amores Perros, Baise moi. All pretty good, really, Ex-drummer and baise moi were pretty graphic though.

What did you make of Baise-Moi?

I've not seen it but heard it's fairly extreme ...

Yeah it is, but that's also because the actresses are porn stars who have actual sex on screen, which is not that usual. Lots of violence and sex though, and because it was filmed on video it has a sortof amateurish gritty look which makes it a bit more intense. Kinda reminded me of Natural Born Killers, have you seen that?

Edit: Apparently today it is exactly 6 years ago that one of the lead actresses committed suicide..

It was either Echo or Illusions that recommanded Fido a few months back

    Excellent movie

I should probably try Reservoir Dogs one more time. After a few Meg Ryan movies, maybe it won't seem so bad?

  13. #403
    Reservoir Dogs...bad? the fuck?

    Yeh. What he said.

I didn't have any prep, didn't know it would be dark and bloody. I thought it was going to be a movie about dogs.

    You are joking.

I remember going to see it in an arthouse cinema in Richmond, back in my student days.

Nobody had heard of this Tarantino fella, but the movie was getting rave reviews in the more indy type publications. It wasn't on general release when it came out.

    We weren't disappointed.

Seriously. It was ages ago, and my sister's husband raved about it. He's the type to never give a preview, just said "you'll love this movie!" and prided himself on finding anything new. I had never read a review or even the description on the box. No idea who this Tarantino was. I really thought it was a movie about dogs (because my sister adores dogs). Imagine my surprise. The first few minutes were just....bloody.

In contrast, when I saw Blood Simple, I was prepared for the dark humor. That was a really good movie.

Yeah. THat's a bit of a surprise then. You should see Amores Perros, that one is about dogs, sorta. Also a bit dark and bloody sometimes though!

Just saw "Rodger Waters' The Wall Live in Berlin" this weekend. It was made in 1990,released in 2003, but I hadn't yet seen it. Not at all what I expected. I knew it was a concert not the movie, but the performances were mind-blowing. Especially toward the end, when they acted out "skits" from the movie or music videos along with the music. Just awesome.

It looks like some narc's home movie about two women who go out and commit random violence because they were victimized in the past. The start has a graphic gang rape scene, and it goes from there.

If you watch it, don't bother being sober. It's not provocative or poignant, but it's not porno, either. Just...Depressing.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

    Over the last few days;

The King's speech; a decent costume drama, but while watching I was desperately trying to understand why this supposedly is the best movie of the year, I couldn't come up with a good reason.

London Boulevard; not the very best movie about a criminal failing at going the straight and narrow after being released from prison. Still very decent acting by the leads.

Black Swan; I'm not into ballet all that much (though a friend of mine and I had a great joke about that in a full elevator after the movie) but this movie pulled it off; very entertaining and thought provoking. A soliste ballerina can't cope with getting a double lead in Swan Lake and life in general.

True Grit; absolutely loved this western. The Coen brothers should get an award for their entire oeuvre ASAP.
    Congratulations America

Agreed on Black Swan. Creepy enough to be haunting.

I saw true grit, I liked it a lot! Planning to see black swam very soon, and I won tickets to season of the witch (but reviews for that one are pretty crap..)

Those tickets you could give to somebody you don't really like. Or as a punishment to a person who deserves it. Or you could give me 100 euros and I will volunteer to use them.

Bad enough to finally win over a friend of mine to the side of people who think Nicolas Cage shouldn't be allowed to do anything in front of a camera. The man seems to think that acting means looking like you're holding back a turd.

I don't know, he also has a lot of good movies.

Accidentally gave myself a Guy Ritchie action-heist double-feature last night with Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Ritchie has such an identifiable film style, I'm not sure how I feel about but, but I liked the movies well enough, Snatch more than Lock, Stock.

They're very Landan Cockney Gangsta - a bit too clichéd really, but both movies had genuinely funny belly-laugh moments.

Pitt as the pikey gippo was a revelation though.
