Not to mention writing political and language columns in the NYTimes for 30 years. Such a right wing extremist.

    Cool!

EDIT: In THX 1138 one of the characters in the Vast White Prison was constantly mumbling what seemed to be nonsense. In an interview with Lucas he said the character's dialogue was entirely taken from Nixon speeches.... wonder if it was all Bill Safire material...

By today's standards Nixon wasn't particularly right wing. Hell, he created the EPA ffs -- imagine today's Republican Party considering such a thing!

And Reagan raised them, repeatedly, when he realized the country needed more revenue! Go figure. These crazy things went on back when running the country properly (trying at least...) was more important than ideology I guess.

Deceptive stat. Like saying that Babe Ruth struck out in baseball a lot.

Regan made massive cuts to income taxes (top rate from 70% to 28%), corporate taxes (45% to 37%) and reduced the number of personal income tax brackets from something like 18 down to 2. Not to mention uncapping deductions and allowing loss carryovers. So the Tax Reform Act of 1986 that he signed contained a number of things that were minor tax increases (raised gas tax from 4 to 8 cents or something, OMG!). The biggest one was a small rise in capital gains taxes, which was the price he paid to pass a major reform bill.

So, you know, in the broad push to lower and simplify taxes in 1986, Regan slightly raised a few specifics types of taxes. He compromised, unlike Obama. But this should probably go in the thread about taxation, I don't like polluting the image thread with politics. It should be a happy place with unicorns and photos of human suffering.

    Ask and ye shall receive

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

This spectacular night-time view of Earth is called Black Marble.

It has been assembled from a series of cloud-free images acquired by one of the most capable satellites in the sky today - the Suomi spacecraft.

The platform was launched by the US last year, principally to deliver critical meteorological data.

The Black Marble dataset shows off one of Suomi's key innovations: the low-light sensitivity of its VIIRS instrument.

For the record, Suomi is Finnish for Finland

It is, however, an American weather satellite named after the famous US meteorologist who (presumably) was originally of Finnish stock. Melting pot, mmm?

I know that, but I reckoned most of our fellow forumers did not know what my nation called itself. The biographer of Kekkonen also had the surname Suomi, which I've always found a pleasant coincidence.

I actually first learned that little tidbit reading science fiction as a kid, believe it or not. Ever read Frezza's Vereschagin novels?

A photograph of a Derby County football team giving the Nazi salute is to be auctioned.

The picture is part of an album of the club's 1934 tour of Germany.

An order from Hitler's officials to give the salute had been backed by British diplomats and only goalkeeper Jack Kirby refused.

    Odd? Yes.

I used to watch his show on CNN and FOX for a while, and while his religiosity is a turn off, his point of view (and some of the humor he uses to express it) has interesting moments.

I have NOT seen any of his stuff on his own...network thingy.

Edit: Okay, I just watched that (edited) clip. What specifically was wrong with what he was saying?
I used to watch it quite a bit. His rhetoric makes sense only to those who are uninformed about the issues he talks about. It usually has some face value, until you realize that he's being intentionally misleading, omitting important information, being highly selective, and generally conspiratorial.

The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun
