Thread: What's messing with your Groove?

So if you don't get onto the limited Headstart programme, you don't get any pre-kindergarten schooling?

Unless, presumably, you pay for it?

    ~

Not that I know much at all about early child-rearing and schooling thereof, but kindergarten is where most kids start their schooling, isn't it? Pre-kindergarten isn't ubiquitous?

Or am I just hideously out of date.

  2. #3722
your questions appear to be correct. I don't want to suggest that students who don't attend headstart or vpk will be behind, but it has given Ocean a noticeable leg up over her classmates thus far. most students still start schooling with kindergarten.

from a more personal point, we were hoping to get scarlett in so that brandy can start job hunting. She only wanted to do this inhome daycare for as long as she believed she needed to be home with scarlett, and she believes that point has been reached. but she can't do any serious job hunting until scarlett is taken care of, and since headstart isn't an option, we don't know what kind of other programs we can work with until brandy heads back into a career. catch 22.

Haven't there been studies showing that the advantages of head start are pretty much entirely gone by the end of elementary school?

that's still 6 years of schooling, and the most likely time when students would be placed in advanced or gifted tracks.

I suppose you can try to figure just which part of Head Start was useful to Ocean and try to replicate that at home?

the early adjustment to a school setting is the largest and hardest to replicate, but yes we do have most lesson plans that Ocean's class used, but not the software.

Any chance of getting other parents with similarly aged kids together and trying to create a de facto school atmosphere?

Funny thing is I believe it was the opposite in my family when I was young. I (as the eldest) didn't go to kindergarten and started first in the first year of school. My brother went to kindergarten so despite there being 2.5 years between us at birth, there was only 1 year between us starting education. With my mum having to look after my brother anyway she didn't see a need to send me away early and once I was it was easier to send him too.

Not being a parent I thought the biggest distinction between kids generally at starting school was based on whether the parents read regularly to them or not. Not going to kindergarten (let alone pre-kindergarten) never held me back, by the time I started school I could already start to read and write which was better than most kids. Its only my personal experience but I would let it bother you about it potentially holding her back, you both sound like good parents and I imagine you read to her etc so I'm sure she'll be fine.

Trick played by the Swedish railways; there are a number of trains between Stockholm Central trains station and Airlanda Airport.

The one they want you to take : the Arlanda Airport Express, price SEK260 (€31/$40) advertised everywhere and clearly indicated on the screens in the central hal.

The one they don't want you to know about ; the commuter train to Arlanda, price SEK120 (€14,50/$18.75) not advertised anywhere, and not indicated on the screens in the central hal. Only people who happen to know that Arlanda C is the train station is actually the train station at the airport, and who know the price will be able to buy the correct ticket on the train to Malmö. Once they have wrestled the platform from where this train will leave from an employee at the platform they will for the very first time see a single enamled sign which (probably by mistake) still tells you that Arlanda C is the Airport station.

It's down-right fishy, although it should be noted that the express train is a LOT faster and a LOT more convenient. But yeah, the business with the express trains has been a source of much anger and frustration

Actually, the express train is only convenient if you have to travel to Stockholm Central. I was staying 200 m from Stockholm Södra station, so taking the express and then the metro would have been a lot less convenient. The time difference is 20 minutes, the commuter train is convenient enough. I also have a strong suspicion that the SEK75 surcharge is to reduce the attraction of the commuter train, which without that would be close to 1/4th of the price of the express train.

What is annoying is not that they try to sell their express train. What is annoying is that they do so by actively hiding the alternatives.
    Congratulations America

Brussels traffic is the worst I have ever encountered it's insane. Too crowded, almost the entire city is a traffic jam, and people drive rather aggressively so you have to really put your car in front of other cars to get anywhere. While being pushed to the side by buses, trucks.. Crazy.

And parking is 30 euros for half a day but a parking ticket is 25 for a day..

Scanners with auto-functions. Basically you put in a paper, and it tries to analyze the direction of your handwritten text. I didn't figure out how to overwrite this setting, and hence got pages pivoted in all angles. 30 pages that I spent more than an hour on, wasted.
Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?

Brandy's mom either has or is about to pass away. This is going to be rough for her.

Need to figure out how we're going to afford a cremation.

I like how his photographs look unreal, but since they are photographs (before photoshop ) they are actually real, which is kinda freaky.

Dealing with government bureaucrats about any topic at all. The most useless and least flexible people you will ever come across. I've yet to talk to one that didn't make me want to become an anarchist. Anyone who supports a larger role for the government has clearly never had any dealings with the government.
