magic, but loki doesn't put much stock in that
i don't know how much of this is a spoiler. None of this should be material that the show hasn't had a chance to explain, but its been long enough that I don't remember completely.

I'm not a nutritionist or anything, but I don't think you can survive on just grain in the olden times, you need fruit and vegetables and so on - unless, of course, you like scurvy. More to the point, wouldn't a five year long winter kill off all the trees, other planet-life and non-domesticated fauna?

I don't think the tv show has got the far, and even with the books it requires a leap.

I think moving isn't so much of an option for a large part of the population, but the north is definitely less populated. It's as large as the rest of the Kingdoms combined, but not the most populated of them
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!
You could say the same about plenty of countries in the world, and yet that doesn't happen. The North, despite being the size of the rest of the kingdoms combined, also has a really low population. There was an article about how Winter affects the political economy of the seven kingdoms. You can try googling for it.

In a feudal society, how do you deal with an influx of refugees?

The White Walkers haven't shown up for over 8000 years if the commonly understood in-universe chronology is to be believed (how exactly the measure what a 'year' is with the seasons being as they are I don't know). In our terms, they're a phenomena that was last witnessed in the 6th millennium BC.
What I want to know is, if castles like Winterfell and Casterly Rock date back to such legendary times such as the long night and the age of heroes and are thus thousands of years old... then they must have been at a level of technology back then that they could build large, inhabitable stone fortifications, so they were sort of a early medieval kinda level of technology. And they had the engineering nous to not only build them, but build them in weird places like rocky outcrops or the top of mountain ranges. By comparison, stone henge is less than 5000 years old, and is considered a marvel of engineering for that time.
Basically, their entire world has been stuck at the same level of technology for thousands upon thousands of years, what's that about?

I imagine constant Winters does that to you. Think about the nice parts of Africa that were not particularly developed thousands of years after the dawn of civilization. It is surprising that Essos never got developed I suppose.

Its actually gone backwards a bit. They have lost and/or forgotten a lot of the magic that got them to the point they are still mooching off of. Bran The Builder is addressed as a legend that no one can match, the Wall is an impossible thing that they can only slow the decomposition of, and I'm betting a lot of the heavy/awkward lifting they used trained dragons for is no longer possible.

I think wildfire is another example. Previous king had the castle stuffed full of the shit, but already its treated like something thats difficult to create and handle. Accidentally coming across a cache of it helped a great deal with the defense of Kings Landing.

I believe this is why the wildlings/freefolk are trying their damndest to get south of The Wall. Everybody else further south doesn't know or doesn't remember the horrors north of The Wall and probably believe that they'll be taken care of by their local Houses or the King.
. . .
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
Think I remember something about that, glass candles and all that. I was recalling from Clash of Kings, the alchemists are almost done with, and they won't share the directions on how to make wildfire. Tyrion talks about how difficult it is to make the stuff, and how costly wildfire has become. One of the alchemists even admitted to not destroying old stock because they are no longer up to the task of producing it as they once were.

What I took away from that was that with the dragons back in the world magic also was on the up again.
Less than 24 hours to the season's finale.
Congratulations America
That's because basically their storyline has been used up and most likely they're not going to feature or not going to matter in the last two books.
I wonder how they're going to do season five. I guess we're going to get a lot of book 4 stuff that hasn't been covered so far.
Congratulations America
I really hope they had a long conversation with Martin first.
Probably half of book 4 and half of book 5.

Kit Harrington has really come into his own this season.
