Thread: What's messing with your Groove?

  1. #4291
I'm disturbed to learn that one of my son's roommates had a mental health crisis......and seven cop cars swarmed the premises, and treated everyone like they were public enemies, with guns drawn.

  2. #4292
Completely over the top reactions from American cops?

    You're making it up, shirley.

  3. #4293
Wouldn't be the first time. Many cops don't get training on dealing with people who have mental illness.

No idea why its messing with me so much so that I felt like posting about it.
Shyness blows; and let me tell you a little anecdote about how silly it can make us.

Not so long ago I was at a club in Istanbul. Nominally with two friends, but actually quite alone. I am 51 years old, weigh a lot more than I should weigh and generally don't consider myself the catch of the month (not trying to talk myself down, just being realistic). So I am standing there, looking nowhere in particular as I realize that someone is looking at me. The someone being a tall, dark, handsome, especially nicely built young man. I think 'Is he looking at me', while I check behind me if there might be someone else he could be looking at. But sure enough, unless he's particularly interested in the wall behind me, he appearantly is looking at me.

I decide to find out what this looking is about, maybe he's some high-priced escort, you never know these days, and maybe he just thinks I am a potential customer. So what I do is, move to his corner, just close enough to withdraw without loss of face but close enough to strike up a conversation if he continues with the looking thing.

Then, he takes off and I think 'well, obviously not that interested'. But, what happens is that he walks up to the bar, orders a beer and walks back to his original spot next to me. There he empties the beer rather faster than you'd expect. Still no words are exchanged. Then he does a second tour to the bar and the second beer is downed almost as fast as the first. After which he puts the bottle down on a table, walks right up to me and says: 'Sorry, you must think I'm an alcoholic or something, but I really just was mustering the courage to come up and talk to you'.

    Just saying.
    Congratulations America

My son's pet mouse is dying. Oh, he's lived a longer life than his fellow "feeder" mice, and he had a great life (by pet standards), so I shouldn't complain. It just sucks that it comes right after his step-mother's death last week....and so close to his own birthday.

So my reserve unit moved their Battle Assembly ( weekend) for the month to this weekend. Considering I work 8 hours a day and go to class fulltime I was hoping for the weekend off.. So much for sleep

Home alone, so I decided to drown the loneliness by gorging myself on yummy BBQ ribs and managed to chip a tooth for like the first time ever Fortunately it's not visible even though it's one of my front teeth. Unfortunately it's really fucking annoying and also I don't wanna go to the dentist

I was having difficulties sleeping (okay I was surfing Kickstarter) when I heard what sounded like a man and a woman screaming and shouting, interspersed with the occasional thumping sound. It was 3AM on a very boring night so I went to check it out and, though it was difficult, managed to find the apartment from which it seemed to be coming. New neighbours. I rang the doorbell and suddenly it was quiet, but no-one opened either.

Now, neighbours having rows in the middle of the night isn't a new experience (although it's the first time I've heard anything in this house), but those thumping sounds and the way she was screaming were unsettling, so I called the cops who were there within 5 minutes they had been fighting about something, but no-one seemed to have been hurt, and they got worried when I rang the doorbell. It's a very young couple so I hope that'll be the end of it and that I haven't just ensured that they do it quietly from now on. They know who sicked the cops on 'em though so that'll be awkward I guess.

I'm glad. I've had to call the cops on crazy couples a few times, and they've always checked it out promptly. Unfortunately, they can't always do much more than to show themselves and make a general assessment, ask if anyone wants help, and then scamper off again. That's why you need nosy persistent friends and neighbours I guess. If nothing else you can always give someone who might need it a nearby place to hide out right when they need it. So... if you hear people going bump in the night, consider being a busybody

I wanted to discuss "deferred costs", including things like retirement and healthcare, climate and energy, education and infrastructure, plus military expenditures as offensive vs defensive initiatives. But I knew it'd be knocked down any way I framed it.

  14. #4304
Maybe if you framed it as a photo rather than as a collage your chances of success would be better? Ie. one or two things at a time with clear examples. If you want to touch on all those topics all at once you'll have write an long essay, and even then it may be difficult to have a good discussion about it, and not just because we're members of the Spongebob generation I dunno, it's up to you to decide how you want to post, but I think keeping things reasonable simple, focused and clear may facilitate discussion more than trying to do too many things all at once in a single conversation. peace

Nah, I don't believe photos should limit people's judgement, or the other way around.

Thanks, but that's like telling your patients to distill their symptoms into one office visit, expecting great results.

Another thing that messes with me.....is when my kids say "what are you going to do about it besides complain?" When I say my voice matters as a voter, they're quick to prove me wrong. It's pretty hard to convince these kids to vote, or that voting matters.

If you have to choose, do you prefer structure and clarity, or a hopeless jumbled mess?

Thanks, but that's like telling your patients to distill their symptoms into one office visit, expecting great results.
*psst* Just a heads-up: This is an online forum where we post casually, of our own free will, on our free time and for fun. It's not a job. You're not a patient, and we're not your doctors. Indeed, most of us are loons

The comparison you make is as sensible as saying that I should ignore difficult, confused and frustrating patients because that's what you're supposed to do with difficult and frustrating people on a forum. Or that I should go like this all the time when talking to patients: ""

In this matter, as in so many others, having a clear idea of what's what is helpful. You're correct in that it isn't always possible for a patient to focus on just one problem, but you're mistaken in your belief that this fact is relevant to posting here, unless you're trying to tell us that you're feeling unwell and that that's the reason why you post the way you do. In which case, er, maybe you need to supplement this forum with some other kind of helpful and strengthening activity.

I don't, but I was curious which mayo it was so I googled it and found this:
    http://www.snack-nieuws.nl/hellmanns...ste-mayonaise/

    edit: seems that's misleading! http://www.snack-nieuws.nl/hardcore-...un-hemd-gezet/

BTW, that there's a site devoted to news about snacks is pretty cool

Never heard of it. I always buy Thomy (belongs to Nestlé) but I think you can only get them here and in Germany.

Also, have I mentioned how much I hate what the local news website has done to themselves?

I've been forced to return to Endnote because I couldn't force Mendeley to convert an old paper that contained citations made with Endnote. I swear I have never felt such a strong urge to strangle and/or stab someone. God fucking damn it I hate this program. It's just so much clunkier and slower and more frustrating than Mendeley. I mean, I appreciate how easy it makes things like changing reference-styles etc, but, where inserting multiple citations from Mendeley may take just a few seconds, I can spend minutes doing the same in EndNote... one... citation... at... a... pause... pause... upda...ting... fields... time. ARGH. I expected to be done with this buttsore of a paper yesterday A plague on both their houses

It shouldn't really annoy me as it's allowing me to cull out the morons, but friends whom I once believed were perfectly reasonable people are going on and on about people infected with Ebola rising from the dead and it being man-made. The zombie thing being from a satire site called Big American News. I'm not sure where the man-made stuff came from. I'll make a guess that it's something they also took as fact from some conspiracy website.

  27. #4317
Tell them you heard a rumour about that rumour being planted by the government to help them identify and locate conspiracy-theorists.

I gladly would, but they got butthurt and deleted me after I requested a link to a published journal, the CDC or the WHO proving their claim.

  29. #4319
I hope for your sake they're conspiracy theorists rather than ebola-chan-worshipping 4channers who're gonna dox you for your temerity

Yeah, she's someone I went to high school with. I'd have more faith in her figuring out how to start cheating on her boyfriend while he's in the same room than figuring out that doxing is not some dudes putting mini boxing gloves on their cocks.
