In another sign that the idea of free market competition is a load of crap, all the major theaters will be increasing their 3D movie ticket prices today. My area gets an increase of 50%, from $10, to $15 a person. To watch a movie. With a crowd.
This is not a Hollywood studio decision. This is a decision the theaters made, surely by coincidence, all at the same time.
Why?
Because pirates can't pirate 3D movies that aren't on DVD yet.
I've actually hypothesized a novel way they could pirate 3D movies, but then you'd have to have a 3D enabled TV. If I can figure it out, its only a matter of time before someone else does.
You could also point out the price fixing of beverages if you wanted to knock free-market competition.

Not to hijack this thread with talk of 3D TVs, but I never want one. The idea of 3D all the time is nauseating. If I wanted that, I'd turn off the damn TV and participate in REAL LIFE!
We had a huge nerdy discussion about that last night, that they would need to bring out more TVS where you didn't need the glasses. Because who the hell would sit in front of the TV for more than 2 hours with those damn glasses on? Most people use TV as a background noise anyway, they're rarely watching it.
Sorry for the rant, I just think 3D should be confined to theaters and amusement parks. But, I'm sure it will eventually creep into everyone's homes. I guess this crochety lady will have to get with the times.

My son told me his friend's household has 7 tv sets for 5 people. Two are big screens. One in kitchen, family room, living room, basement play room, 3 in bedrooms. Plus the screens in their cars.
We only have 4 TVs (3 LCD, 1 Plasma)
I'm waiting till the TVs are able to do 3D without glasses as well. The tech is in the pipeline, and even Nintendo is planning to bring it to the DS within a year. Glasses are lame.
Oh, trust me Ness, I wouldn't be buying one. Hubby and I are the types that let the dummies that have to have it first buy it, then we wait until technology is improved and prices lowered before we purchase. That's why we only have the 13" I came into the relationship with, and our Samsung 36" we bought in 2004. No need to buy a ginormous television when we have dumb friends that buy them; we just watch movies over there!

I have CNN on, 'live'. This means Palin stumping in Nevada (is it for anyone or just against Reid?). I'm waiting for her to say the federal stimulus was stupid, and all those underwater Vegas homeowners can just wait for the casinos to bring back their jobs.
Her answer is to be simple and do what's morally right. MORALLY RIGHT. To get our economy ROARING again, means cutting federal spending. OK. Should we start with Nevada?
She mentioned Obamacare and SSSocialized medicine. OK. What's the proposal besides being SSSelfish? She says God has blessed us and made us Exceptional. And we need a Commander in Chief to lead our troops, not a law professor giving lectures.

Catgrrl, have you even seen anything ever using the modern glasses technology? Or are you just judging it based on prior experiences with a completely different tech?
Personally I too get things when they're affordable - but I have a HD set with a HD Sky subscription now because it is affordable and I like it, am looking forward to getting 3D TV when its affordable, not first to get it.
The 3D technology being used in the upcoming 3D HDTV's doesn't use the method that 3D films like Avatar have used. I've used both and I quite prefer the movie version. I would suggest that you try out the TV tech before purchasing it, and to not just go on how the 3D looks at the movies. Unless the Active Shutter technology improves vastly over the hardware I've used previously, I have no intent to purchase it ever.

It may not be the same as the movies (and I will of course try it out first) - but nor is it the same as the crappy plastic blue/red "3D" glasses of the past.
I admit, Rand, I haven't yet. I can't sit two hours in a movie theater because I'm pregnant and have to get up and go to the bathroom at least once an hour. I'm hoping to go in the future, because I would like to see how my eyes do with the RealD.
That being said, I'm not going to sit with glasses on in front of a TV. My TV is primarily on as background noise, and I look up at the screen now and then, unless it's a show I really want to watch. When 3D improves enough that 3D can be done affordably without the glasses, maybe I would consider it in my home, but I really think it's unnecessary. I'm just not interesting in watching the evening news or Food Network in 3D. The only thing that Hubby and I agree would be fun is racing games on a video game console.
HD, however, I absolutely love and am glad we have that.
EDIT: funny enough, I never got nauseous on the old red/blue glasses. Its the crap that has been put out after that makes me sick, primarily because of the use of 2 projectors.
Currently doing full time work for only the part time pay. 40+ hours for the next two weeks, only because they fired some other hosts and servers, and need time to replace them.
Nack on 15 hours of class per week, plus 3-4 hours working on homework and studying almost daily.
Prety much only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night, and its really getting to me.
I fell asleep watching Alice, after I woke up again the 3-D thingy got me a blistering headache.
