I'm curious what the liberals on this board think police should do in this situation. Should they do their job? Should they arrest these folks. Put down the riots? Or should they just let the city burn because you know we have a right to 'protest!'

Unlike you, being a librul, I am perfectly comfortable with placing reasonable restrictions on the constitutional rights of a peaceful and responsible majority due to the actions of an irresponsible and violent minority, in order to safeguard society as a whole. So, curfew would be a good start. If it'd been any other country well-trained riot police or the equivalent of the national guard would've been helpful.

Your question is a bit weird though. Cops in Charlotte have made numerous arrests so they're obviously "doing their job", notwithstanding rumors about them shooting a protestor and then arresting some black dude for it.

*Looks at TV* How long you do expect that kind of unrest to go before action is taken? The rioting and looting had been going on for hours. I know response time can be bad but... yeah in many of these cases the police have orders not to engage with the 'protesters' and basically just use tear gas and let the criminals run off as opposed to actively looking to arrest everyone.

I'm thinking Lewk has no concept of controlled choas. The police have learned a lot from the civil rights riots. The police are taking a pretty solid line of action here that is slowing or down right stopping the spread, and frequency, of the protests. This thread is pretty good example of how short sighted Lewk can be.

Most cities (urban areas are where riots take place) have liberal mayors who don't want to crack down hard on rioters. There were recent examples where police were told to back away from the rioters and not try to arrest them

Quelling rioting is not illiberal. Arresting looters is not illiberal. I'm willing to believe that some of your mayors and police are incompetent, but that's independent of their politics.
