Thread: Geopolitical impact of Brexit

  1. #1201
Anyone who thinks we aren't leaving after a Leave vote is an idiot. As a general rule of thumb successful business people generally aren't idiots: that's a difference between public and private sector. Private entities led by idiots tend to fail and die or see the idiot replaced.

So you are nervous about the possibility?
    Congratulations America

  3. #1203
At the time, there seemed to be a real possibility of the UK leaving the EU but retaining full access to the Single Market as well as narly all rights (and obligations) wrt freedom of movement of goods, services and labor. This is less certain now but still a possibility, more or less. Of course it's looking increasingly unlikely but restructuring a business to adjust to Brexit is difficult without a clearer idea of what Brexit will actually entail.

Exactly. Hence the rise of chances for Brexit to be scuppered before it does its full damage and the subsequent rise of hopes for it to be scuppered. As you know I'd rather accept the damage than try to stop Brexit.
    Congratulations America

Article 50 doesn't change any of that at all. It's what is negotiated that changes it.

You can't really put it all that black and white. The future relationship is also a function of the divorce itself.
    Congratulations America

  7. #1207
Of course it is. The divorce was announced with the referendum and the agreement will be reached at the end of A50 negotiations. Serving A50 itself is of no more significance than filing papers to start divorce proceedings having already announced the intention to divorce.

By that logic, the sentence "I'm gonna kill that man!" and the actual killing of said man will be punished equally in court.

Interesting question. But actually Randblade is in (divorce terms) still whining about his wife against his friends. His wife on the other hand observes that he still lives at their home and behaves like his husband. She's not too worried about the future though because her lawyers drew up an ironclad prenup.

Now, does Randblade really believe that divorce is inevitable?
    Congratulations America

Not really. Article 50 isn't Brexit, it is start of proceedings leading to Brexit, which is the actual killing of the man.

Though threats and conspiracy to commit murder are all punishable.

Can you stop the process of Brexit once you have invoked Article 50?

    Yes. Unlikely but possible.

One way under Article 50 is a unanimous agreement to extend Brexit negotiation period for 999 years (effectively cancelling the invocation).

It's clearly the pro-trade internationalists in charge of the country now.

Wait. Foreign students are*bringing money into the country and they*don't have a permanent visa? And yet they want to*cut those numbers because of immigration?

First of all, not all foreign students stay in the country, secondly, if they are indeed staying it's usually due to being people with sought-after skills.

Absolutely fascinating. Too bad Germany doesn't have English as its primary language. We'd love to take the people*the UK is keen on turning away.

Canada will soon have more international students than they know what to do with.

Also, I think you guys do have some courses in English, especially at the Masters level. I have at least one student who's applying.

May is PM she was not my choice Loki as I have said before. I oppose cutting student migration.

But May has been tightening up on student migration for many years. Again part of the reason I didn't want her as PM. She gave a nasty speech on migration last year before the referendum (for which she was pro Remain) so this is her thing not Brexit.

It doesn't matter what your choice is now. This was inevitable given the vote for Brexit. In fact, I distinctly remember claiming that the first post-Brexit government would be a nationalist one and you rubishing that claim.

  18. #1218
It was not inevitable that the Remainer May would be the choice, had it gone to Leavers Boris or Gove or others we would have a much less nationalist one.

Oh and you also suggested it'd be an insular tariff raising nationalist one and instead we're getting a liberal free trade one. So ...

Yeah, a liberal free trade regime that's one step away from abandoning the European common market and hasn't negotiated a single trade agreement.

  21. #1221
You say that as if the European Common Market is an unalloyed good thing. Or that I ever expected us to have negotiated a single trade agreement by now.

So on what basis are you claiming you have a liberal trade regime?

Randblade has this funny idea obviously that free trade means throwing open your own economy onesidedly.

Nonsense. Exports went up because Rand wants to believe they went up.

Take inflation, another way of reporting what they breathlessly report as "highest reading since October 2014" is that inflation was for yet another month TOO LOW but getting better. Inflation is supposed to be 2%, yet despite years of zero interest rates we have inflation catatonic well below target. This "high" of 1.2% is still 0.8% below target. Or the implied terrible 2.5% rise in pharmaceutical costs is only 0.5% above target. That is better than being 0.8% away from it.

Contrast their reporting then of too low inflation figures which were barely changed at all and highlighting the most volatile with their reporting of export numbers. "Little sign" ... "little difference" ... "excluding particularly volatile goods" ... "meaningful rise". Where are the numbers?

Inflation has not seen a "meaningful rise" either but where are the numbers for exports. Doesn't suit the agenda.

Nonsense. Exports went up because exports went up. Exports went up by 1.5% while imports fell which you wouldn't have gleaned from The Economist's hard on for 1.2% inflation being the sign of the end of times.

    You fell down the sar-chasm.

The linked to articles provide context that it is thought that exports could have received a boost due to the sterling (as I and anyone with a basic grasp of economics advised would be quite possible). Point is though that exports went up by 0.7% while imports fell by 1.5% (apologies mistake in post above) a net change in our balance of trade of 2.2%. Net trade was the biggest source of growth in Q3 whether Loki and The Economist's reality denial still want to pretend all this isn't really happening.

Loki's claim that they went up because I want to believe they went up was the ludicrous one. I'm sure the Office for National Statistics, BBC, Financial Times and Telegraph have all started writing articles based on what I want to believe. Again if your German lack of humour prevents you from figuring it out, I'm being sarcastic.

Well, your linked articles also point out that the outlook is a bit more bleak, though.

And, please, if that's sarcasm then I seriously doubt your English ancestry.*Are you sure there isn't a Hillbilly redneck in there somewhere?
