I guess I could always try to wrangle some sort of affiliate appointment, but it's generally not worth the effort. I have enough friends in various academic institutions that if I ever need access to their facilities or whatever it likely wouldn't be such a problem. The only thing I'll really miss is access to the library resources; those are really hard to replicate.
If I ever get wildly successful, then it will be much easier to get some sort of honorary appointment somewhere so I can share my wisdom (ha!) with impressionable young minds from time to time. But that's not for a couple of decades, if ever.

So what will you do after retiring at 35?![]()

For that, I would have had to be a much earlier employee at this company. I suspect they'll eventually have a market value in the low single digit billions, but I got there way too late for my stock options to do more than increase tenfold.
Maybe I'll wait until 70 like a normal person.

Typically, when I'm at a conference, I feel a compulsion to be productive (network, seek out new ideas for research etc). This is the first time I've felt absolutely no such compulsion. I've just spent my days listening to interesting lectures, hanging out with friends and enjoying myself. Perhaps it's because I'm visiting my home town. I'm currently extraordinarily drunk but my feet have somehow managed to find their way back to my extremely pleasant hotel room, through dark and winding streets clad with wet cobblestones and brimming with confused but happy people looking for kebab. Times like these, I really miss living in sthlm.
Time to consult my custom-made burger and hot-wings.

AwesomeHere they have an app that alerts you if someone nearby may need cpr. Might wanna see if they have something similar in your town, could save someone's life someday.

Yeah they have that here as well. At work I'll be wearing a pager at all times so anything in our around work I'll be alerted.
Timbuk2, probably the same here which is why we get refresher courses three times a yearbut doing the basics is still better than nothing and the emergency phone line operator can guide you as well.

Pagers still exist?

Until recently I was enslaved by one and in a couple of months I will be again.

Pagers have quite a few advantages in some situations. I can't use my phone about half the time at work for example. And a pager you can take when you start working and put back when you leave, you don't have to check first to see if it's important or not, better reception, etc.

I finally found an NES Classic. A day after Nintendo announced they were ceasing production.

For most of my life, for various reasons, I have been a total stranger to organization. Recognizing this and wishing to better myself, I made a titanic effort to organize all my shit a while back. At the end of this ill-conceived endeavor I made a special point of placing particularly important documents in a special folder, which I placed in a safe place. Or so I thought. Naturally, last week, when I needed some of the documents in that folder on short notice for a very urgent matter, it was nowhere to be found. Nowhere. I tore the house apart and turned everything inside-out and upside-down and shook it all about etc. Nothing. I was on the verge of a minor breakdown but today I found it, basically by chance, and everything in it was in order. This is not the end, but, although the war goes on, the most important battle of the year has been won.
I'm putting this fucking folder in the gun cabinet![]()

Last week my daughter asked for permission to compete in the Math Bowl later this month.
Yesterday the school asked for permission to test her for the gifted track.
I did alright with her.

A Syrian refugee who fled the fighting in his country carrying a violin on his back is to have an album released by a major record label.
Rami, 21, was a music student and left the city of Homs in 2015. He now lives in Germany, after crossing eight countries, often on foot.
FAKE NEWS!
He's actually on the run fleeing police after carrying out gang rape on German women.
