Thread: Brexit Begins

No the Tories become ever more sceptical has to do with our divergence from Europe from Jacques Delors onwards and both predates and is unrelated to Farage. That is why the Tory-oriented Vote Leave campaign that won the referendum and the racist bigotry of Farage's Leave.EU didn't intermingle. The two are not the same thing.

Which was correct at the time. They are all formal accession nations. Turkeys accession has been put on hold following the failed coup after the referendum but that wasn't to be known at the time. Those nations listed are formally the ones scheduled to join next at the time after Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria did.

RACISTS MAKING A POSTER: There are a lot of Asians in Bradford. *Big Red letters, danger signs everywhere*
RANDBLADE: Well, there are a lot of Asians in Bradford. I see no racism here.

People being concerned about uncontrolled migration and expanding uncontrolled migration is not racism. Since Romania joined the EU over 2% of Romanians have moved to the UK and we are still getting net migration every year. Without any controls.

If those nations join the EU then the chances are the same thing would happen and that would be an extra 2 million people roughly on top of our pre existing net migration and population growth. Without any controls.

Now you may think our housing markets and roads do or don't need another 2 million people who haven't come because they have any special skills but just because they can without being xenophobic.

    WTF!?

No I'm not. I've never seen that before, never heard of it and after having taken a cursory glance through it I would categorically NOT defend it!

One is about racism the other is about control. Where did I say anything about being a minority in our homeland or anything like that? I don't divide us into white and other or any other racist bullshit anyway.

Many people argue that we have a chronic housing shortage that has led to sky-high housing prices so we shouldn't be getting mass net migration due to the pressure it is putting on housing - as well as schools, hospitals, roads etc. Others argue that we have one of the highest population densities in the world. In fact government policy for nearly a decade now has been that migration should be in the tens of thousands to address that.

2 million Turks migrating to the UK would not make Turks a majority of the population or any of the other crap that racist bullshit is about.

This is super dumb. Regardless of whether or not their skills are "special", most EU citizens in the UK are gainfully employed or studying. The problems of your dysfunctional housing market arise primarily from crappy planning policies, not immigration (from the EU or elsewhere, although non-EU immigration is greater). Whatever problems you imagine you have with your roads, it is stupid to attribute them to immigration; immigrants pay taxes towards road upkeep, and if they're using the roads it's likely because they're engaging in some sort of useful economic activity. Only a small fraction of the intra-EU Romanian diaspora can be found in the UK--most of them have moved to Italy, Spain, Germany etc. Romanians constitute a larger fraction of the German population than the British. There are more Romanians living in the US than in the UK. This irrational, disproportionate, paranoid fixation with Romanian immigration is, at its heart, pretty fucking xenophobic. Now I understand that you--the super non-racist Mr. Suspicious Accents--have found a way to dress it up & rationalize it to yourself, but that doesn't mean that these views aren't an expression of xenophobia.

It's not an argument, it's a stupid lie. So-called "lived density" in the UK is highest in England, but England isn't even in the lead in Europe--let alone the world--and its ranking can primarily be attributed to strongly pro-Remain London rather than to the collection of forgotten towns and humorously named racist villages that make up the core of the "Euro-skeptic" xenophobic Little Englander constituency.

I agree that immigration overall is a good thing and I back it. I've always been pro immigration. The country voted to be able to have some controls on it though. In Australia those controls lead to double the per capita immigration rate, more than we have, so too do Canada's controls . . . but the numbers are relatively consistent assisting with planning and the quality of migrants must meet their set criteria. I'm fine with that.

Not sure what case you're trying to prove with regards to Romania. Romania is the best comparator to Turkey etc for multiple reasons. 1) With Poland etc the UK opted not put in controls which other nations did put in, this has been argued as a cause for the UK getting a disproportionate share of Polish migration - this isn't the case with Romania. 2) Romania is the most comparable nation with free movement economics-wise to the proposed accession states. Yes the diaspora has gone to many places but that doesn't change the fact that 2% of the countries population has gone to the UK, so what if 2.5% have gone to America how is that at all relevant to what I wrote?

Speaking as a future neurologist, racism-induced migraines are probably more common than we think, but it's also possible this one is a fib-induced migraine given that it was pretty clear--by the time that ad was launched--that plans for Turkey's accession to the EU had been all but shelved.

All indicative votes ended in rejection.

Even with large numbers abstaining they still couldn't pass anything.

You realize the UK had the right to stop that immigration from Romania under EU rules but chose not to, right? I.e., it's your own damn fault.
Hope is the denial of reality

It should have been a preference vote. They need to pass something, not just fanny around saying what they don't like.

That's not true. Transition controls expired in 2014 which is why I compared with that nation as we exercised the controls, unlike Poland etc where we didn't.

All I can say is, thank god Parliament has taken control of Brexit, or we'd be in a right mess.

The problem with your position is that the majority of those roughly 40k Rumanians you got are either productive members of your society (of the kind you proclaim to want) or are of the kind that are not productive at all, who you can actually tell to leave to country under EU rules.
    Congratulations America

  28. #3688
    You're missing a 0.

For the rest of the world being a 'productive member of society' is not sufficient to get in. The threshold is not comparable, which is the whole point and by design so don't try and wave it away.

So much sovereignty though. All that lovely sovereignty. Can you feel the sovereignty? So glad we're getting more sovereignty. I can feel the sovereignty.
