Default Everything Is Big In Texas...

... even the people; fattest state in the Union according to this study,

    The Fattest Cities

Anybody want to venture a guess why?
But the more important question is that as we nationalize the healthcare system, should states like Texas be charged more than lean states to offset the extra cost of taking care of their fat asses?

2 pound steak, deep fried cheese-bacon-chili fries and 64 ounces of beer for $14.99?

Seriously, ever been to Texas? Lots of cheap, tasty food... and a climate that's way too hot to exercise in.

No. If you fucking asshats want to force me to pay for the health-care costs of everyone else, under the guise of health care being a basic human right or whatthefuckever, you don't get to exclude the folks you don't like. Otherwise, I get to exclude the folks I don't like, and not pay for anyone but myself.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

Interesting. Looking at the fat cities vs skinny cities is like looking at the Rep vs Dem county-by-county electoral maps. Very few exceptions. It would appear that Republicans are fat!

Agreed with Cain. This is yet another issue of everyone being forced to share costs that are partially the results of other people's bad choices.

And Heavens forbid we ever look after one another
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

If you want to have 3-8% of your income go to buying wheelchairs and tummy tucks for fat people, by all means have a blast!

  13. #13
I am, thank you. Those fat people have had some portion of their income going into keeping me alive, educating me and in general making my life as enjoyable as it is. I'm not entirely convinced I'm the one being shafted here, even if Ching-Ping China-man has more flotillas than I do!

If my neighbor with three kids in a one bedroom apartment asked me for help, I would be happy to. And if I didn't pay large portions of my income so that strangers could get help, I could afford to.

Uhm, let's see. San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and El Paso counties all voted for Obama. So did Baltimore city (and county), Memphis, Kansas City, and Birmingham. In fact only 2 of the top 10 fattest counties voted for McCain in 2008.

    Seriously, get a clue.

edit: I just looked at the House voting. El Paso (Texas 16), San Antonio (Texas 20), Dallas (Texas 30), Houston (Texas 18, 29, AND 9), Corpus Christi (Texas 27), Baltimore (Maryland 2/3/7), Memphis (Tennessee 9), Kansas City (Missouri 5), and Birmingham (Alabama 7 but not 6, which is suburban Birmingham) ALL voted for Democrats in the 2008 Congress. So that leaves you with a grand total of one city in the top 10 that voted for a republican - namely Charleston.

I would. There's a huge difference between voluntarily giving to charity and giving up half your shit because men with guns are making you. For one, I don't resent charitable gifts, but I do resent being forced to hand over my shit at threat of gunpoint.

Oh, and what's false about it?

Or is that just your knee-jerk socialist response to arguments against taxation?

Who knew, the relationship (at least in terms of health) is actually the opposite. Hopefully certain people here will avoid making ecological fallacies in the future. A famous one is that support for the KKK and segregationism was strongest in areas with the largest black population. Needless to say, this relationship was not based on blacks supporting the KKK and segregation.

It was a joke ffs. Most of the fat cities are southern, non-coastal cities in red states, while most of the skinny cities are coastal in blue states. As we all know, urban areas always vote much more liberally than rural ones, so a list of cities is unlikely to contain many that are actually conservative. And, I can testify that the south is much fatter than other parts of the country, and that the middle is much fatter than the coasts. An entertaining anecdote: The Christmas card of a hometown friend after moving from Seattle back to southern Illinois: "When we were in Seattle, we were the fattest people we know. Now in Illinois we are the skinniest people we know."

@Loki: interesting, but not about fat. That's about smoking. It's also self-reported, which cannot be controlled for. Self-reported studies are notoriously fickle: it is often used as a big criticism of Consumer Reports. While they research a lot of products, post hoc product performance is based mostly on a) filed consumer complaints and b) CR subscriber surveys. Both are very suspect scientifically, which is why I only take seriously things tested in their labs. But, for example, do conservatives and liberals self-report not only health status but behavior differently?

PS Did you really link to a blog?

  27. #27
The fact that coastal cities are less fat and more Democratic doesn't mean that Democrats are less fat...

Genius, the blog has the link to the study in question. And we have no reason to think that Republicans are significantly more deceitful in self-reporting their health status than Democrats.

    1) I wasn't trying to spam some partisan point, just make a joke. Just because you always jockey for "points" Doesn't mean that everybody else does.
    2) I wouldn't hazard a guess as to which party is fatter. Reps are more southern, Dems are more poor. Both demographics tend towards more fat, so I wouldn't guess one way or the other.
    3) You linked to the blog, not the study. Given that the link was in the blog, why didn't YOU link to it?

But you can see how he might reasonably include you in that group, given that you're the only person around here (and probably the entire world) who's lied about being a member of a death squad to score points in an online debate.
