It was bound to happen eventually, I suppose.

3rd-Grader Busted For Jolly Rancher Possession

A third-grader in a small Texas school district received a week's detention for merely possessing a Jolly Rancher. Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice. But school officials are defending the sentence, saying the school was abiding by a state guideline that banned 'minimal nutrition' foods. 'Whether or not I agree with the guidelines, we have to follow the rules,' said school superintendent Jack Ellis.

Holy hell. This is what happens when 8 year olds are smarter than the people running the schools.

WTF. All 10 year olds these days know to hide their fucking candy and gum, especially in the monitored cafeteria. Maybe Leighann was too busy sexting on her cell phone during lunch to notice. That'll teach her about multi-tasking.

A voluntary hospital worker who rescued 60 goldfish from their ornamental pond when it was being drained is facing prosecution and a £1,000 fine - because he didn't have a licence to move them...

Mr Roberts, a window cleaner, has been told he should have applied for a licence to move the fish - which takes around 30 days to complete.

'This was an emergency,' he said. 'The fish were already distressed by the falling water levels when I took them out. They didn't have 30 days.

Lieghann? WTF? Is that meant to be Leanne? The otherwise not especially retarded girls name?

The parents deserve a weeks detention for that shit.
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

70 years without eating or drinking.

What western medicine fails to recognize is that the human body has many secrets and capacities that few have explored. The human organism is not merely mechanical. And the capacity of the universe to surprise us with the unexpected should make modern doctors be more humble.

The truth is out there, huh Mulder
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

Oh, my fucking God. This exact thing is why it should be legal to shoot cops and politicians on sight.

Reminds me of that story someone posted a while back about Georgia (?), where it's punishable by up to 7 years in prison to practice interior decorating without a license.

New instance of an old scam. They'll find out he's secretly sneaking nutritional supplements, or getting his nourishment intravenously, or whatever. It's actually a huge problem in India right now - fake mystics and magic men attracting hundreds of thousands of followers... who donate money to them. All about the dead presidents, as usual.

I almost posted this in the picture thread, but I have to admit the first thing I thought when I saw it was WTF.

A 13-year-old boy has told jurors that his parents held him prisoner in his own home, locked him in a closet and shot him with pellets from an air gun.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that the boy testified in a barely audible voice Friday at the trial of his mother and stepfather, Damita Devonna Peak and Norris Lazarus Walker who are charged with 82 felony counts in a child cruelty case.

He said he was handcuffed and naked when he was locked inside the closet and had to sleep on the floor. He said he at meals of bread and water and urinated in a plastic jug.

The boys said he thought he was punished for stealing a honey bun from the kitchen.
Stealing a honey bun from the kitchen? In his own house?

Am I supposed to punish the kids when they eat now? I find it sufficient that they don't take food to their rooms.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

He who spares closet lockings hates his son, apparently

A link that makes a little more sense:

The Supreme Court said Monday that the federal government can keep "sexually dangerous" prisoners in custody past the completion of their sentences, overruling arguments that only states hold such power.
    [...]
Justice Stephen Breyer said Congress could authorize the civil commitment of these offenders under its constitutional authority to enact laws "necessary and proper" to the exercise of its specific powers

Apparently, they also get to keep you in jail after you've done your time, should Congress say so. Thank you, "liberal" judges.

I assume the legislation would be retroactive?? Sounds like getting tried twice for the same crime.

The BBC has a selection of quotes from papers around the world about the British election, some were amusing (Iran claiming to UK is less democratic than it as lower turnout), some were sensible, but these two made me laugh, from Zimbabwe:
The British change of guard offers a simple lesson in the practice of modern-day democracy. Those who lose elections, by whatever margins, should accept the fact and move on to write their memoirs, give their families some of their time and hope posterity will look kindly upon them

    Standard, opposition paper

The chaotic nature of British 'democracy' was laid bare for the whole world to see. But the election scandal runs deeper, as the under-representation of women shows.

I think it already exists, which is what this case sorted out - state level civil commitments are unconstitutional, but federal-level civil commitments are allowed. Ugh.

I'm so hoping that AQ manages to nuke D.C. already. Enough threats and whining and wimpy airliner attacks already. Nuke the fucking capital, please!

Well, serving time twice for the same crime anyway. And, yes, that *is* the reason that civil commitments are utterly unconstitutional bullshit (double jeopardy), no matter what 7 retarded judges seem to think.

A Jefferson County geometry teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave after being accused of using a hypothetical assassination of President Barack Obama as a way to teach geometric angles.

School Superintendent Phil Hammonds said Tuesday that Corner High School teacher Gregory Harrison showed a lack of judgment and faces the possibility of termination.

Birmingham's Secret Service office questioned the teacher but closed the case after determining there was no credible threat.

Hammond said his office has been flooded with calls from across the nation, mainly by people upset at the initial decision not to take any disciplinary action against the teacher.

So not only can you die under a Metro train, but inside them too:
Body May Have Been Aboard Metro Train for Hours

A passenger died Monday while riding a Red Line train, according to Metro.Paramedics were called there after receiving a report of an “unconscious patron” on a train at Shady Grove. They determined the passenger was dead.
The man got on the inbound train at Twinbrook at about 10:15 a.m., which means he traveled to Silver Spring and then back to Shady Grove by 11:55 a.m., according to Metro police. No one reported the body to Metro, and the man was not seen during the inspection of the train before it was put in the rail yard.

The body was found as the train was prepared to be put back in service before 3 p.m. Metro is reviewing its procedure for inspecting trains before moving them into rail yards after service.
A Metro spokesperson said the death is not being considered suspicious.
