Thread: When should kids start to have kids?

  1. #1

Default When should kids start to have kids?

Imagine you are raising a kid. When would you make them get their first kid pregnant? First summer of high school? Wait until they are 16 or 17?

I've brought this up before, but saw another chart on this today and felt compelled to ask a more specific question. With a poll.

You are asking a certain demographic that won't respond according to the prevailing rate...

Beyond that, most of us are male or older and female so your poll is useless. :P

16 for Brandy, 25 for me.

Imagine you are raising a kid. When would you make them get their first kid pregnant?
Are you asking when I would force myself to become a great-grandfather?

Rand copied Dread's question from the kids working thread.

When should kids start to work?
Imagine you are raising a kid. When would you make them get their first summer job? First summer of high school? Wait until they are 16 or 17?

I've brought this up before, but saw another chart on this today and felt compelled to ask a more specific question. With a poll.
My guess is Rand is saying parents should not make their kids start to work, any more than kids should have babies?

Ask the same of Dread in the work thread poll?

I don't know what is going on.

Old enough to have sex and make babies = old enough to have job?
Parents shouldn't dictate when their kids work any more than they should supervise their sex life?
Parents should lock their kids in their rooms with chastity belts until they move out?
Kids ought to work before they fuck, or fuck around before they work?

    I dunno.....

Biologically 15 - 20 probably makes sense, but we are blessed to have a society with so many things to do and the ability to find mates when we're more emotionally mature.

It's not always easy to have kids in your early 30s or even late 20s for some, but it's one of the better traits of our society. Except in all those countries where women are basically production cows.

Oh look it's a Chaloobi thread

Before 25 you're an idiot, after 35 the kid will likely be a monster. Have fun!
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

You skanky bitch. Nobody should breed before 30, btw. And kids born to +35 parents are not likely to be monsters. Moron.

Brandy has 2 kids before me, only Scarlett is mine.

Er, actually, the older a woman is, the more likely that there will be complications in the pregnancy. Also higher rates of Down's syndrome among women over the 35yr mark. Whether or not someone should call them monsters is a different issue entirely....

I was going to say something horrible here and decided not to. Older parents make better parents. Its backed by data and shit.

Little reason to waste that quality parentage on mongoloids, though!

Meh. To each his own. My parents were in their early 20s when they had me, but I'd say they were pretty darn good parents. I do think it's good to have two people who are stable financially and mature enough to handle raising kids.

I mean look at me, I'm going to be 30 this year and just starting a family. So, it's not like I'm a young lass anymore.

I was merely stating that biologically it's alot more risky to have a pregnancy, at least for a woman, later in life. I'm not saying people shouldn't; I know a few people that have had their first kids in their late 30s and did have trouble during the pregnancy/labor, but their kids are fine now.

The risk of Downs at 30 its nearly 0, something like a tenth of a percent. At 40 its still lest than 1% but by 45 its 3.5%. Down's is diagnosable very early in the pregnancy so the process can be terminated. Breeding between the ages of 30 and 40, room to have up to 3 children comfortably when no one should have more than 2, is very reasonable. The benefits of having older parents certainly vastly outweigh these minor risks. Moron.

ZPG - there's already too many people. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

What if I produce intelligent and "high-quality" offspring? Should I be allowed to produce more? Especially since I'll be even older then! And older parents are better parents!!!11!!!one

Intelligent, high qualified people are a dime a dozen. But I take your point. Some sci-fi universes I've read speculate a future Earth where breeding rights, or above replacement rights, are awarded based on the fitness of the parents. And then there's the famous Puppateer manipulated lottery....
