Thread: So...what happened to the Atari forums?

Default So...what happened to the Atari forums?

Hey everybody. Thanks for the message, DarkWraith. So why did you guys get kicked off of Atari? If I had to guess, it was because the pointless debates (haha) were consuming too much bandwidth.

New forum management. They didn't like political talkings because the other forum they ran didn't have political talkings, so they demodded Rand and later banned Dread. We weren't sticking around after that. If you dig, or just wait in this thread long enough, you'll get a more complete story.

But we won in the end. This forum is more successful than the new forum they have.

That's cool. It always struck me as odd that an eclectic group of intellectuals were squatting on the Atari forums to have their debates. It makes a lot more sense to have your own forums. Good for you!

Who you callin' intellectual? But you are right...Atari didn't want any intelligent conversations happening on their time!
I don't have a problem with authority....I just don't like being told what to do!Remember, the toes you step on today may be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow!RIP Fluffy! 01-07-09 I'm so sorry Fluffster! People who don't like cats were probably mice in an earlier life! My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely! The nice part about living in a small town: When you don't know what you're doing, someone else always does!

    Wait, intellectuals?

Welcome back. Agreed with Sir Chalobi. We're all neanderthals.

On a side note, that's more true than you probably think. Humans not exclusively of African origin apparently all have a splash of Neanderthal genome from some interbreeding incident that occurred approximately 50k years ago. Technically, though, Neanderthals were as human as Pygmies and Mongols, otherwise interbreeding would have been impossible.

    mongols?
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

I would disagree with a characterization of this forum as an "intellectual" forum, but I don't think that has a great deal to do with the quality of its contributors. I would instead argue that this environment isn't conducive to meaningful intellectual exchange. I think that I vaguely remember a discussion about this a while back, too.

See Steely. It is where the famous hominid was actually discovered. Neanderthal is an Americanism that has been largely abandoned by the professionals.

Edit: I'd agree with Shipper. It's got some intellectual elements, but the tenor of things is far more geared towards information manipulation, scoring arguing points and "winning" to be anywhere near intellectual. Besides, a good chunk of the forum is "gee, lookit that" kind of stuff.

Not a value judgment, just an assessment.

To write it off as an "Americanism" isn't entirely correct.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neandertal
During the 19th century the valley was called Neandershöhle (Neander's Hollow), and after 1850 Neanderthal (Neander Valley). It was named after Joachim Neander, a 17th-century German pastor. Neander is the Greek translation of his family name Neumann — both names meaning "new man". He lived nearby in Düsseldorf and loved the valley for giving him the inspiration for his compositions. Former names of the gorge were Das Gesteins (The Rockiness) and Das Hundsklipp (Cliff of dogs, perhaps in a sense like "Beastly Cliff").
In 1901 an orthographic reform in Germany changed the spelling of Thal (valley) to Tal. The scientific names like Homo neanderthalensis or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis for Neanderthal man are not affected by this change, because the laws of taxonomy retain the original spelling at the time of naming. The railway station nearby still carries the name Neanderthal, because the railway was built in 1879.
I'm not a professional, so of course I don't know what the taxonomic convention among professionals actually is. I'm wagering that the author of the wiki article didn't, either, but at any rate the orthographic reform bit is true.

Yeah. Definitely not a value judgment on my part, either - I mean, I don't look for meaningful intellectual exchange in this forum, and I was impressed by someone's characterization of it as a "conversation." That's the value for me. Interesting people. The quasi-intellectual discussions just make it more interesting by flushing out the varying temperaments, perspectives, etc

I'm not accepting the fact you are the actual Shipper until I receive some varifying information. I'll be riding the middle trail soon and might drop down by Bare Hole.

We almost had it here for a little while. But that went out the window in favor of the circle-jerks and stupid tricks to support and prolong the same. It's why I'm not around as much any more. So close.
