holy fock. France game goes from fire to flames.

    Ziggy edit:

    Spoiler:

Not only do they go a goal down.

Minutes later a red card for gourcuff for an elbow in the SA box.

And to think, i was mildly irked that they chose to show this match instead of the likely more entertaining max v uru match. How wrong can one man be?

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

    game update:
Urugay scored, so only two goals difference between Mex and ZAF

    This could get exciting still

Spoilers ... is anyone saving the game to see it tonight? Or am I being overdramatic?

    Lor's opinion:
I sincerely hope South Africa make it, talk about a come back story. Apparently the red card was a soft one and a little harsh of the ref - anyone actually see it?

Oh and I can't see Domenech staying on as coach if they lose this.

  8. #338
    Spoiler:
It was pretty soft. Technically it could have been given; leading with the elbow while contending in the air for the ball. In reality those happen all the time and its practically impossible to jump very high without using your arms. Especially not higher than a massive SA defender. Im not even sure the defender went down or anything.

Don't you guys have a replay on demand thing online? No need to record it here, you can replay all matches on a page without spoilers. Of course, it would be blocked to anyone outside the netherlands

Err, didn't the defender stay down a minute or so until he was carried off on a stretcher? And the guy went in pretty hard, with his elbow in the face.. I think it was deserved.

And god, the commentator on the France-SA match was horrible.
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!

    .
Yes. Seems he did go down. Im not exactly surprised that he was stretchered off either.

But no, i dont think it was particularly deserved. Justifiable, yes, but could easily have been overlooked or a lesser punishment given. There was no intent, and they were a goal down, and most massive black south african guys ive met dont usually need a stretcher after getting a forearm in the face, so theres definately an element of gamesmanship in play here.

I've been saying since 1982 that FIFA needs to be more aggressive with officiating. So no complaints from me.

I completely disagree. Watching champions league football with referees from la liga and the bundesliga is like pulling teeth

Domenech snubs SA manager Carlos Alberto and refuses to shake his hand at the final whistle.

You'd think France couldn't leave this cup with any more ignominy.

    Poor losers.

So was watching Maradona get fouled 40 times/game in 1986. He was hit ever time he touched the ball. Good hard tackles and shoulder checks are fine, but every time a defender gets beat he pulls the guy down or hacks him. No wonder so few goals are scored! If the players learn that they'll get yellows or even reds with those plays, they'll stop doing them and we can see soccer get played.

Of course, it it is European teams who play this style most, and each team protects its own, erm, oeuvre. IMO that Euros do this is why FIFA has been so slow to change it.

You boys should all be in a bar together.

Your group watching in spoilers without beers is just wrong.

I'd rather you drank liquor, but it's my understanding that beer is the drink of choice for watching people kick balls.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

    Wooooooo!

    England actually playing football. Unbelievable.
