Do people here know a lot about phones? I'm extending my contract this week. I'll get at least a cut of more than €15/month, which is good - but I need a new phone too and I don't know much about it. A friend of mine has a Samsung Galaxy S, that seems nice (though it looks like an iphone clone, but whatever). Anyone know if that one's good?

You're talking about metaphor's that you might need if an insanely unlikely situation occurs. WTF? Since these are "needs" to you, please tell me how many metaphors you carry in your pocket right now?

My mobile and my wallet are "never leave home without it" objects. I don't know about you but I never make sure to have a full supply of metaphors in my pocket when I go out.
Randy, its not an argument against you. I'm not fighting with you. I'm just pointing out that when the lights go out, you won't need your phone as much as a way to start a fire. Sure, the lights may never go out. Or they might go out tomorrow. Who knows?

There's been book after book after story after story done about how humans have grown too dependant on their technology and how if our civilization had a hickup we'd be doomed. And in those stories there's always the guy with the high tech device he won't part with and he either learns an important lesson or gets killed or something.

This is not real world stuff, this is fantasy, a cautionary tale, not an argument that you ought to carry a book of matches with you instead of your Blackberry, because that's somehow smart in this day and age. It's just an excercise in fun, light-hearted (maybe) creative thinking. That's why I called you the most boring Brit in Britland. Get it? See, look:

Your needs are not fixed, they're not permanently objective and nor are they set by some mythical situation. Your needs are subjective; set by your current situation, Your background, responsibilities, opportunities and general circumstances as they are at the moment.

Do you agree with that or not? It seems not. You were having fun, I was being serious. If you want to have a fun discussion I'm happy to take part then, but I was being serious and it seemed you were too. We were not on the same page and not talking about consistent things.

I'm happy to agree that if some fantasy scenario occurs that our needs will change, are you happy to agree that in the real world we live in my listed "needs" (wallet, car, smartphone etc) are reasonable? Do you agree or disagree with the line "nobody needs a smartphone" in the world we live in rather than a fantasy scenario?

Yes RB you have a huge dick could you please get over it and yourself now
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

    Randy, you are sometimes mystifying.

EDIT: And no, I don't want to have a fun discussion with you. You don't seem very much fun at all.

Oh i'm far from upset. I'm actually enjoying the ramblings, it's nice to see business as usual in here. Truth be told I'd be more upset/confused if you kept this thread on topic.

Does anyone else agree with Rand that a smartphone could somehow be a required need for someone (or anyone), instead of being an item thats caused people to forgot how to operate without it? They are nifty, but hardly a life or death, bankrupt or prosperous type of device...

I can take part in fun conversations but I created this as a serious discussion and responded seriously because you weren't clear that you were deliberately talking fantasy nonsense.

    Indeed, because it can.

Figures, numbers and human effort are important parts of the real world, but not all inclusive.

I never said wars are not a possible reality, wars are an existing reality so that would be absurd.

It is of course Malthusian idiocy to believe that we can't sustain a growing population despite all evidence, scientific progress and history being to the contrary.

Its funny that people like you can't comprehend people not believing batshit insane conspiracy theories is "boring" but not believing batshit insane religions is sensible. I at least am consistent.

Are all "needs" a matter of "life or death, bankrupt or prosperous"

It's a conspiracy theory that people need to eat and defecate? Really Randy?

Did I deny that people need to do that?

I thought I said that people needed to do those basics, but that wasn't sufficient. That if you have those basic needs met (I have a toilet and a kitchen) then you get more advanced needs. Is that "insane"?

I'm sorry, I think we're talking cross purposes here My mocking post at Chaloobi was based on your previous insistence that 20 billion people (rough estimate) could comfortably live as we've accustomed to. Certainly it isn't insane to want more than beets and taters!

    Ah, I get you.

Well you can call Malthusian conspiracy theories normal and denying them insane, I'll call it the opposite.

Depends on the job. I'm sure they make offic-type jobs more efficient - they allow the job to creep into time you might otherwise spend doing personal things. Any job that requires you to access information from a remote location would greatly benefit too - like a plumber. He gets a call for a job. He drives to the location using his smart-phone's GPS. He gets to the job and its a type of fixture he's never heard of, so he looks up the diagrams for it on the internet via the phone, then he calls Home Depot to see if they have the parts, etc . . . . that all would take a lot more time and effort without the phone. But a plumber can still do his job without it, of course.

You're just jealous that you didn't get any of his Nazi child-rape gold, because that's what Switzerland does, see

I should say right here that I don't know whatever conversation you're referencing. Is the accusation that the Swiss let him go because he's got money in their banks? (What better reason is there?) Where'd the Nazi's come from (in this context, of course)????

    Read the Polanski thread...
I don't think we managed 30 replies before someone brought up the Nazis.

To anyone thats seen Inglourious Basterds. Does anyone else read Nazi in the accent Pitt used in the movie? I can't seem to shake it.

Ok. Anyway, the iPone 4 looks wonderful. They weren't exaggerating too much about that hi-res screen. Too bad about the antenna problem. That sucks.

I tried one out for maybe a minute a few weeks ago. It was really lightweight and thin. The screen is also super bright and sharp, though pretty big (10 centimeters). Though I didn't get a sense of the battery life. The applications Samsung loaded with it were junky (mainly the "social networking aggregator"). But it seemed like a pretty quality phone.

Dropped by the store today, and he said that battery life for touch screen phones were all comparable, so I think I'm going with this one.

Now to decide whether paying an extra €1,25/month is worth upgrading mobile internet to 1Mbps, which is something like 4 or 5 times the standard internet deal.

Maybe you should try living in a city with approximately 15 million inhabitants where people are not in the habit of staying at home and have a social life without a mobile phone. It is doable, but the waste of time would be to the extent that I would say that a mobile is a requirement. I'm not so certain a smartphone is really what's needed. I hardly ever use any of the functions of my phone other than calling or texting.
    Congratulations America
