Default So, who's trying the new IE now?

I have to say, I'm honestly surprised how good it is. However, the move towards standards compliance broke several things (jquery UI being among them) as well as some formattings on this site.

Tip: With Alt+8 and Alt+9 you can switch between IE8 and IE9 document mode in case you run across such problems.

If you can post a pic of what it breaks on here, we can likely diagnose why. Its likely to be the fault of vBulletin more than it will be Microsoft's.

Other than that, no not yet. I haven't looked into, and I am unsure if I'll need to re-install IE9 once its out of beta, or whether IE9 will just be able to update itself. I would very much like to, as it would be nice to include IE9 as a platform for testing my still in production portfolio to see how it will handle it.

Microsoft is doing a sorta IAMA advertising campaign on reddit right now. I'm waiting to see how they manage to handle all the IE hate on there before I worry about switching browsers (again).

Why? Most of the negative comments/hate I've seen on Gizmodo or Reddit relating to IE9 are pretty ignorant. I can pretty much list them as:

    1. Microsoft/Internet Explorer isn't popular so I hate it and its shit.

    2. It has included a successful, desired, and intuitive feature from Chrome/Firefox/Opera that I knock its predecessor for not having, but now its copying them, so I hate it and its shit.

    3. I can't be bothered to read any of the numerous tech blogs outlining its features (like adherence to modern web standards), and I haven't even tried it out, but I'm going to complain about its lack of adherence to CSS3, HTML5, and other modern web standards, because IE 6 - 8 didn't have them either, so therefore its shit and I hate it.

    4. Its not perfect and only adheres to 95% of modern web standards that won't be finalized for another decade, therefore it is complete shit and I hate it.

    5. Its slow, because Internet Explorer 6 - 8 was slow, and I don't need to try it or read anything to back this claim up, it just is. Therefore its shit and I hate it.

    6. Its Internet Explorer, so its shit and I hate it.

If Microsoft wouldn't have to deal with a shit storm of negative publicity afterward, this could probably be handled by telling them to not act like such fucking morons, and apply the same standards of critique, logic, and intellect to themselves that they expect or demand from everyone else.

I meant to add this as an edit above, but a lot of the problems come from poor and underhanded advertsing IE9 is seeing. Their marketing team has down right lied, twisted facts, and simply done a poor job of comparing IE9 to Firefox and Chrome. I am not expecting anything openly honest from the microsoft guys on reddit. They are after all there as part of an advertising campaign.

Even without that, the whole point of them going to reddit was to chip away at the "its shit" mentality. If that means explaining why some stuff works the way it does, great. If that means "but browser X does or does not do Y", thats not so great.

I'm not seeing how their advertising or actions relate to whether or not the browser is good or not. Caravaggio was a murderous douchebag, but that doesn't make his paintings any less impressive.

    I downloaded it, seems fine.

I'll play with it more, I'm sure - but for a long time I preferred IE to Firefox - in fact, my ceasing to use IE was when IE7 became IE8 and IE7pro no longer blocked ads for me correctly. Before that, IE was faster and better. Since then IE is still probably faster and less of a memory hog, but, well.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

I'm sure its good, just like Chrome and Firefox are good browsers. Same as Walmart and Target having good prices. You reach a point where the differences in performance between entities is so minor, that to ask a user to alter a habit takes more than playing catch up. Users can choose to start looking at the larger picture.

"Reopen accidentally closed tabs " and "Visual search suggestions shown as you type" I get on Firefox 3.6.9 but besides that I can't see how they have "lied and twisted facts".

It only takes one to qualfiy, but here is some copypasta from a Firefox dev.

    • "Combined search and address bar" type "firefox is awesome" in your url bar
    • "Reopen accidentally closed tabs" ctrl-shift-t anyone? History, recently closed tabs/windows
    • "Domain name highlighting in the address bar to alert you to deceptive websites" go to https://paypal.com, and see
    • let's fix this: "Full hardware acceleration for text, graphics, and video provided by default" in beta5
    • "Developer tools built into the browser" You're right, but, well, I think Firebug is not that hard to install
    • "Compatibility mode to view websites designed for older browsers" IE Tab anyone?
    • "H.264-encoded HTML5 video support" what about OGG/Theora and WebM?
    • "Most protection against socially engineered malware" Wait, what?
    • "Protection from malicious cross-site scripting attacks" What is that one?

Can't wait till someone like Illusions goes crazy on this.

Without a doubt, this is far from uncommon, but when you put together something like this for the masses, while at the same time try to sway experienced users or users from the other camp(s), you should fully expect to be called on crap claims.

I don't think you actually mean "visual search suggestions" though, as that's something different - what you're looking for is "Search provider suggestions as you type in the search box", which that table says Firefox can do. That site also says firefox has the capability for "Automatic recovery of crashed tabs". I'm not sure if they can do the full reopen accidentally closed tabs thing so I'd take your word for it on whether or not it counts.

    I often use it.

History->Recently Closed Tabs->Select which of the last 10 you want to reopen
    Also has History->Recently Closed Windows

It only takes one to qualfiy, but here is some copypasta from a Firefox dev.
No it doesn't take only 1 to qualify. 1 can be a mistake, it takes more than that to claim they have "lied and twisted facts".
    * "Combined search and address bar" type "firefox is awesome" in your url bar
Not necessarily obvious with the Search window next to it as well
    * "Reopen accidentally closed tabs" ctrl-shift-t anyone? History, recently closed tabs/windows
    * "Domain name highlighting in the address bar to alert you to deceptive websites" go to https://paypal.com, and see
    I said the first
    * let's fix this: "Full hardware acceleration for text, graphics, and video provided by default" in beta5
So he's conceding this one? The fact that Firefox will include this in their next Beta is a good thing, but not evidence that MS have "lied and twisted facts".
    * "Developer tools built into the browser" You're right, but, well, I think Firebug is not that hard to install
Perhaps not, but its not a comparison of add-ons.
    * "Compatibility mode to view websites designed for older browsers" IE Tab anyone?
Its not a comparison of add-ons.
    * "H.264-encoded HTML5 video support" what about OGG/Theora and WebM?
    What about it?
    * "Most protection against socially engineered malware" Wait, what?
I LOL'd at that one, typical marketing speak
    * "Protection from malicious cross-site scripting attacks" What is that one?
    I'm curious too.

So of that list you have 3 items. Oooh wow

I don't know the answer to your question, but it wouldn't surprise me since they say they're including hardware acceleration. It probably uses DirectX 10 or later.

    I'm curious too
Basically something like causing code to run while on your bank's website (that looks like it's from your bank but isn't) that can then bypass usual security stuffs to steal your account information. Or whatever.

Correct, I've seen a few complaints from XP Hotmail users that get the "works better on IE9 beta" window, only to have that tell them to upgrade to a more recent OS.

The big problem with Microsoft is that they don't actually update their browsers like the other major vendors, they just make a new one. The browser market today isn't divided up between IE, Chrome Safari and Firefox (and Opera), it's actually split between IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. (And Opera). Thus, the better CSS2 and 3 support in IE9 means exactly jack and shit to web developers who'll still have to support the earlier versions, because enough people still use them. IE7 will probably eventually be superseded by IE8, through the whole Windows auto-update system, IE6 lingers on in large businesses and government departments who either won't upgrade or can't because they've got bespoke software which only works on IE6 and will probably stay around the market share for years to come, but no one will give a shit about them. However, if IE9 really only works on Vista and 7 as I've heard, then IE8 is going to be around for years to come too. That means that any support for advanced CSS stuff in IE9 means about as much as it does that it's already in FF, Chrome, Opera &c - you still can't rely on those techniques because significant swaths of the audience will still be using browsers which don't support them.

The fundamental problem is that there are two kinds of browsers out there: proper ones and shit ones, and while shit ones still exist are are used by significant numbers of users they'll still have to be supported, and this holds back web development and costs man hours. The addition of another browser to the proper category that happens to have been made by Microsoft doesn't change anything, and it doesn't change the fact that 100% of currently used browsers in the 'shit' category are made by Microsoft.

My county completed its migration from IE6 to IE7 last week

Web developers are finally starting to give up on IE6. I don't think flicker, google, youtube, facebook, reddit or digg work correctly on IE6. Now that Windows XP has finally reached its end of life (for real this time!) I think we will see a lot of businesses moving onto Windows 7. My library system has already decided to make the switch, but the public won't see Windows 7 machines till some time next year. I'm supposed to get a preview laptop to start planning classes around next month.

What sucks most about IE9 only supporting Vista/7 is that it pretty much screws over the entire netbook market.

I could have sworn there were netbooks that had Vista on them, and I would assume 7 as well.

Who the hell would buy one otherwise? (that's a serious question).

The kids laptops are nearing the end of their lives, I'm considering netbooks as replacements. But not if I can't get them with 7.

I really don't think we're going to see a mass migration to from XP to 7 any time soon. The problem is that XP is a basically solid operating system, so there's no compelling reason to actually move to 7.

Netbooks come with Windows 7 starter, which is very, very restricted.

    Hmmm.

I was thinking they'd be good sizewise, but maybe I'll just buy them normal notebooks instead. Ah well, don't have to decide on that until December, anyway.

Which was why, until very recently, most came with Windows XP. Plus its a smaller install, and easier on system resources. Dell will still offer XP until the 22nd of this month, and Microsoft's official cutoff date for everyone else isn't until the 22nd of next month.

WTH are you talking about? My complaint was that two groups of people that seem to pride themselves on logical, deductive, intellectual, and objective thought, and expecting or demanding others to behave in the same manner seem to become feces throwing monkeys when it comes to anything IE or Microsoft related, or challenges their highly entrenched preferred type of software.

This pretty much illustrates my very complaint. Those are worthwhile points of critique. They seem to be in the minority of comments though.

On reddit that was the highest rated, and most discussed, comment (connected to that Microsoft link).

not sure why (or how) you've connected gizmodo with reddit. Reddit has looked down on Gizmodo since their TVBGone stunt that got them banned from CES, an thats the same group of geniuses that got banned from Apple announcements. Although I do think they get a little more respect than the Techcrunch dramaqueens.

That comparison checklist was frustrating. Only IE 9 can "control whether certain third parties can track your browsing activity"? Yeah fucking right.
