Tech win! Started around 9pm...its 4:41 right now, whoops. Damn Americans beat me to the moon by a year...
Those are all of my units, never fired a single shot on a non-barbarian.
That's odd. :/
Quit the Russian game on Prince since when I declared on #2 Monty, he had barely any resistance, so that was no fun. So on to King, huge, marathon, Napoleon. Since marathon, huge allows you to build more cities because of lesser penalties, that +2 culture per city is a very, very, strong UA.
Already been declared on by Ghandi, Alexander and the English wench. Nothing spectacular with regard to opposition so far since I am ahead in tech level.

Huge gives you +2 culture per city, where Large doesn't?
Happiness is the no-goer on too much expansion though innit ...
So far on Prince I'm getting quite a bit of resistance from Nappy. He picked a fight with so many of the City States, they all unilaterally declared war on him.![]()
No, huge lets you support more cities becausefrom population and nr of cities is less than on large.
Well, it was on large where I had problems maintaining 6 cities. On Huge I have 9 now with relatively few problems. I have had a stroke of luck when 3 city states wanted 1 other dead. So by taking that 1 out, I allied 3 of which 2 had luxury goods I didn't have, +10Happiness is the no-goer on too much expansion though innit .... Maintaining them with Patronage helps.
I'm starting to appreciate City States. They can be game changers. When Lizzy declared on me, I wasn't worried, she was halfway around the map from me. But then she allied Tyre and some other military City State which were right next to me, and all of a sudden I had a problem. So far on Prince I'm getting quite a bit of resistance from Nappy. A low tech problem luckily, but still.

I am just about managingon Large - have around 9 or 10 cities so far and looking for more expansion. I do look for locations where there are new luxuries though, I need to build colosseums and circus's (circii?
) quickly in each city, and I try to build wonders which give
(like Hanging Gardens and Notre Dame). Plus, of course,
policies.
I will go back to Huge after this one though. Even on Large the end of turn processing is taking around 35-40 secs already, so not a lot of difference to Huge for me![]()
I also just started to appreciate the trading posts. If you want a little economy for happy buildings you're going to need them instead of farms. Also I put cities with markets and libraries on "Avoid Growth" which makes research a +6 for 2 citizens on libs and +3 money per city and them Great People pop out faster. Great people are ... great! Cities growing slowly, avoids
One thing that irritates the crap out of me in city screen is those huge Citizens symbols. Often they're right over the food production of a tile and you need to zoom all the way in to figure out yields.
And another thing, for some reason the culture city expansion doesn't like to go into the ocean towards pearls or fish. I usually end up buying those tiles.

Do trading posts expand and increase in $$$ if you stick a citizen on 'em, like the cottages used to in IV?
I usually tend to have a few trading posts, but haven't noticed them expand, as I've only ever just reached industrialisation in my games thus far.

Not sure I get what you mean about the Citizen symbol blocking the food production on a tile? You mean the manually-clickable green-on/black-off citizen symbol?
Seems fine to me on mine, can clearly see what the production is for each tile beneath the citizen symbol - sounds like a gphx glitch?
Got a screeny?
Nope. They do get science some how, I haven't played that late but NGS's screenie they had a blue icon.

I just finished my first proper game, large, as a warlord, playing as Russia. First I had a rather small army, minding my own business, until the very large and powerful japan decided to declare war on me. Fortunately, the way to my civilization was through a mountain bottleneck, and I managed to plug that hole, and kill a lot of his attacking units. When he was weakened, I counterattacked, and suddenly he wanted peace. He wanted it so badly, he traded me all his cities except his capital.Got a bunch of puppet cities, annexed some, had to build a shitload of circuses to get everybody happy again, but then I had a huge empire, and researched a lot faster than the rest, too. And had a lot of money. So after that it was pretty simple to beat the rest.
City states are especially awesome if they were conquered by someone else, and you liberate them. If you are very large, you don't really need the extra city anyway, so if you liberate them you get all the bonuses for a long time. And i read in the civipedia that if the UN is built, all liberated city states automatically vote for you.
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!
Japan gave you his entire empire? That's not even fun, is it???
Has anyone noticed the AI using its non-combat units tactically in battle? I made a deal with one AI to go to war against another (I love the 10 turns to prepare option, btw) and we were falling over each other to take our victim's cities. My asshole ally brought up settlers and workers to block me from the coup de gras attack and he ended up taking the prize city after I did the hard work of beating it down with my crossbowmen. I was impressed.

I sure am. I'm disgustingly honest when Ghandi asks me: "Those troops you've been parading next to my borders, you aren't planning any sort of war are you?".
As always, religion is the easy way out. Might be great to cure early unhappiness, but next thing you know in 2000 AD people will tell you the world is 6000 years oldI'm never even cracked open rationalism. I get a lot of mileage out of piety though. Give the people their soma and get 'em to work.
Wait a second ... hang on a minute ....![]()

As soon as we get an AI that is at least clever enough to not wage war upon itself or isn't allied and at war with the same faction, I'm going to do my best to win the game.
Until then, I'm roleplaying to keep things interesting
Check out Catherine's relation with Oslo and the Pacts of Secrecy.
And here are the Oslonians fighting amongst themselves.

WTF? How does the computer decide who is on what side? Is each unit a said? Total chaos? Any word on when the first patch is coming out?

Bingo. As I was going for tech victory I looked ahead, saw the policy, and built trading posts like a madman. Didn't actually end up adding on too much, but the extra gold is nice. I like trading posts in that if I don't want to grow I don't need a farm, and also because gold is killer if you're trying to play nice with city-states/need something in a pinch.
Aye, was playing on Earth last night as Askia, took Napolean at 3000 BC with the help of Alexander, then my empire got stretched out, I agreed to help Xander against the Montezuma in order to get on his good side, then once I had my lowly units prepared, the Iroqouis attacked from my blind side, took a city and some units. Then once I'd driven them back (thanks to a lucky peace treaty from Montezuma) they allied with Dublin, a militaristic city-state literally right next to me. Had a very good fight on my hands till I was able to coax Hiawatha into giving up for the time being. Still, I was impressed and happy to see the AI was playing smart and nearly took me out (on King).
Oh, and as for Catherine's relationships, the pacts of secrecy are those that you have against her, although I'm not sure about the allies bit at the bottom. But maybe that's what you were saying anyway.
Fuckinay. This fucking STeam bullshit is pissing me off. For some reason I can't connect to my fucking steam account so this fucking game I fucking paid for and is on my own fucking computer wont' fucking run. FUK!Anyone have any fucking ideas how to fix this fucking shit?

Start Steam in offline mode. If you've ever played it before, you don't need to connect.
Pirate.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
How? I click the fucking icon and the first thing it does is try to connect.

For those of you who grew up with Civ, Target has Civ 3 for $6. Is it worth it, or should I wait for a Steam holiday sale on Civ 4 or 5?
Civ 3 is the red headed step child of the Civ franchise. You're better off with Civ 2.
