Isn't TWF a little too small and isolated to have a 'clique'?
If not I don't know how you managed it with what, 200 members?

TWF is actually a clique from the Atari forums.
Specifically it was the clique called Community Chat, which would do it's best to drive away new members.

So, Tear really got banned for one of these fights?
I know there are rules of civil discourse to uphold, but come on, there aren't very many of us left.
I enjoy blank walls.
Are you asking if Minx is into bondage scenarios?
200 people is more than enough for cliques to form. A tenth of that would be enough. Which is relevant, since while there may be 200 accounts *possibly even 200 accounts that have actually posted something* but there are nowhere near 200 accounts which are active enough to engage in that sort of social clumping
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"
yeah look i don't really see what we gain from letting ourselves be held hostage to one person's unreasonable temper. with respect to flipping out over the slightest imagined insults, tear really IS the odd man out. it's unfortunate, because when he's in a good mood he posts awesome things unlike that pretender Wiggin, and things were really going well this time around. but i guess that means we can hope for another peaceful period![]()

I assume you're aware of my previous identity over there?
I've heard of bizarre, hushed rituals.
IRL indeed, but I wouldn't think those numbers would inspire the same playground mentality online though, give credence to perhaps traditional age/maturity - experience/education barriers, but surely those can be overcome by willing, patient parties.
A pipe dream for TWF?

So, Tear’s ban has been rendered permanent, and we thought we owed the rest of you a fuller explanation of some of the thought processes behind this.
Tear’s behavior since we got here has by no means been purely bad. There were plenty of spaces of time when he’s been completely reasonable and contributed positively to this forum. But on the other hand, the incidents involving him have been way too frequent, and his actions and hair trigger temper have been having a deleterious effect on the forum overall.
It is not an exaggeration when I say that the vast majority of our time these past few months has been spent dealing with Tear and all the problems he creates. I would be surprised if many of you were fully aware of all the problems he’s caused, which was by design – dragging that stuff into a public spotlight and making them bigger was the exact opposite of our goals. I say this only to be fully level with you – the stuff most of you have seen is probably more than enough. We’ve tried a lot of different tactics over time, and met with varying levels of success. We have sometimes been able to buy good behavior a few days or a week at a time, but it was a constant process. We have about 70 members of various states of activity here, and when we wind up spending most of our time dealing with just one of them, there’s something terribly wrong. The problem is only made more glaring by the fact that all the other posters on this board cause virtually no problems worthy of note.
Aside from his monopoly on our time, there was also the impact his tantrums were having on the forum. His hostility, and the constant danger of setting him off, and the far too frequent derailments of threads for his attacks on individual members, has not exactly created a great forum atmosphere. From my own observations and what people have been telling me, he’s driving other posters to post less and ruining parts of the forum experience for others. The complaints about his behavior have been coming to me in a nearly constant stream for months now.
The threat of another of explosion by him has been an axe constantly hanging over this forum for a long time now. Speaking only for myself right now, I have to ashamedly admit that I have too often ignored complaints about his behavior, despite being meritorious, because I was unwilling to risk having to deal with another tantrum. Worse, in my opinion, I have asked people who were being targeted by him to just endure it and not respond to his provocations until he got tired of beating on them. It was usually unfair of me to ask it of the people I did, and my guilt was made worse by how often they complied. After each time I promised myself that I’d never let that happen again, but I often did anyways, justifying it to myself by saying while what Tear was doing was bad, things would only get worse if anyone asked him to stop.
We’ve given him plenty of chances to change, and tried many different approaches to try to coax him into cooperating and not being so aggressive against people. Few forums on the internet would have put up with it as long as we have, and I personally haven't seen a single one that would have tolerated some of the attacks we’ve let Tear get away with. There comes a time though when we have to admit defeat; he’s not ever going to change. The alt accounts he briefly used to try to flood the forum after the last explosion was just the last bit of proof; it’s clear that there’s no hope here, and giving him yet another chance will only increase the damage he can cause and draw out this painful process.
As somebody else said in a previous post, we can’t allow one person's temper to hold the forum hostage. We can’t keep putting in so much effort into keeping one person around who only spits in our faces in return. We can’t keep letting the threat of Tear’s fury color the decisions made and taint the discourse. I can’t keep asking people to try to just quietly endure Tear’s attacks on them until he gets bored with them and moves on. I know that many people here aren’t completely comfortable with the idea of bannings, but in this case we’re out of other options. It’s time to end this, close the chapter, and move forward.
For what it's worth, we wish him well wherever he goes from here.
As a purely intellectual exercise, I wonder how this would have panned out if mods didn't exist, there was no one to report posts to, no one to warn other posters with real threats of points and bannings, no authority, no person with more 'power' here than anyone else.
People just able to respond with words. Or by not responding, turning the other cheek, ignoring.
Can the crowd, in an online forum, bring 'wayward' posters round? Or shun them to the point where they get bored and leave?
~
The following is no reflection on the mods here, either generally nor on this strange Tear situation.
I feel this is a sad day. A first for TWF. A permaban. An exclusion. A long-time and regular member thrown out of the city walls.
I always hope, naiively perhaps, that the breadth of sharp minds, tongues and wit we have here is more than enough to deal with any silliness, flames, abuse, lies, deceit, whatever that may come our way, without recourse to mod powers.
I don't like muting people.
I think the peer pressure thing doesn't work online. Getting people hot and bothered seems to be exactly what certain posters thrive off of. Sure, the annoyance may leave if they get no feedback, but a forum, by nature, doesn't work that way. Hell, this forum's design negates the use of the ignore feature (thanks quote feature!).
Then you get people like kat who only seem to post in an attempt to spread their message for more search engine results.
Wasn't Tear some kind of biologist? Has he, at any time in the past 6 months, seeking to separate his good side from his darker impulses, taken any kind of potion?
The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun
Concur. No one wants to read through pages and pages of the latest line by line grudge match.

May I have a link to the thread that got ][ear banned?
I know that sounds tasteless, but I can't find him on the member's list anymore to check it out.
I enjoy blank walls.
To prevent further derailment of threads people didn't want derailed, and to counter the brief forum flood, the meat of it was moved here.
Grudge threads are like trainwrecks. You just can't look away.
EDIT: Geez, that was... unpleasant to say the least.
I enjoy blank walls.
It's a little like Tear is dead.
