Okay but my brain is notoriously bad, pls explain your point steely

The point is that the point of the exercise is to bring second number in line with the first number. Currently, we're short by about £150 billion. That is to say, we're spending £150 billion more than we're getting through taxes, every year. The difference is being made up by borrowing, which is why debt interest makes up £44 billion of government spending. Currently, we owe just over £1 trillion. The broader point, then, is that we simply cannot keep this up, and that things have to be cut from the public budget right now for the sake of the future. We're well past the point where this can be dealt with painlessly, so the only thing left is to try and cut in places where it causes least harm. And I'd think the EMA qualifies.

You could raise taxes. I've never understood the concept of countries borrowing money; it's always a negative revenue stream...always.

I should think it refers to general welfare state stuff.

It will be, I'd heard that welfare > income tax, but that's ridiculous.

But it looks like general welfare state stuff is already in other pieces of the pie. Does Social Protection mean old age pensions (like our Social Security) or government pensions?

    Which?

No, not as far as I know.

Why can't you just raise taxes on booze and fags? That way you can get back the allowance AND some of the BAE money.

Personal social services, health, education, housing---don't those contain some general "welfare" elements? What part of the pie are old-age pensions?

  11. #41
We already have by far the largest tax on those Minx and already it can be cheaper for people to drive to France, buy their booze and fags than drive to Tesco's to do so. In order to make up the missing money on duties would make prices insane and it's estimated the more we put up our already high duties the more evasion we'll have as people stock up in France.

Australia has a similar welfare system for high school and university students. It's called 'Youth Allowance' and it's a generous sum of ~$250 per fortnight. But you do have to satisfy a certain criteria to be eligible.

I think it's a complete waste of money and a burden on the tax payer. I've had a paying job since I was 15 and I know heaps of other people who started at a similar age and have continued to support themselves without the help of the government. And frankly, high school students who do rely on such welfare are just lazy bums and should be taxed at a higher rate later on in life. Walk into any shopping centre during the afternoon, weekends, school holidays, and the majority of workers are teenagers who know what it means to earn their own money.

Same goes for university students, although if the government is 'adamant' on the support, then exceptions can be made. Two of my friends relied solely on government support throughout high school and continued onto university where they were also given some $2000 per semester as additional support. They're more than capable to find part time work, and in fact, their degrees make it easy for them too since they only go to uni some three days a week. Yet they even have the audacity to complain that the money wasn't enough and when questioned why they didn't try to find a part time job, it was always some stupid reason "i don't like working with people...i'm lazy". There are plenty of idiots like them in this state who live off the government.

What's even more outrageous is that you can still get this money from the government whilst working a part time job. For example, this one idiot I use to know, had a part time job at a prominent department store in the central part of the city and he was also on the youth allowance program. Apparently it was slightly less because he was already employed, but still a hefty sum. Mid 2009, the then prime minister Keven Rudd came out saying that he'd give some ~$900 to every single employed person who had earned over a specific amount for that financial year plus to anyone who was receiving some sort of financial help from the government (ie, any dumb ass on the youth allowance program). The whole idea behind it was the global recession crap but anyway, the idiot that I knew at the time ended up getting two servings of the $900 because he'd earned over the threshold from his job plus he was on the youth allowance program.

Such welfare systems only encourage laziness and idiotic people to abuse the system. If it were up to me I'd scrap the whole thing and all those students who live off tax payers can go find a job.

Isn't that a lot like saying the existence of prostituion encourages people to prostitute themselves? Or, the existence of money encourages people to join organized crime?

What they also do is make sure that it isn't only the rich kids that get to relax during their uni years. Without such allowances (and hang on, what are their expenses? Rent? Tuition? Food? Clothes? Social activities?) it's mostly the wealthier kids that can avoid having to work too much in addition to their studies. Thus enabling them to make more of their uni years than their peers who are distracted or disturbed by work/financial insecurity on top of all the usual nonsense such as love and life.

Don't worry about laziness and abuse, I think you can count on the college graduates to repay most of their 500 AUD/month in taxes over the course of their long and vastly improved lives.

Hang on, why are we letting poor people's kids into university in the first place? Only dumb people are poor
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

Why are you talking about university? This isn't about university, it's about the UK equivalent of high school.

I was replying to Draco's post, but I'm not sure I see why highschool kids would be very different in principle.

Because they're children still being looked after by mummy and daddy at home? (Who're still getting welfare TO look after their children at this stage). Uni students are independent adults - mum and dad can't claim benefits for them.

Yes but if mummy and daddy aren't as rich as rich mummies and daddies then we again have the problem of people wasting time and energy on things other than school, living, spending time with family, etc. Of course since they don't have to pay rent or tuition it's only fair that they get less than 500 AUD/month.

But on the bright side this will only be true of those who can fairly conveniently travel to France. You'll either make more money from the taxes (just a miniscule raise would be more than enough), or save money and suffering by discouraging excessive drinking. If people stock up in france and sell cheap booze to kids then you can punish them, thus further furthering social progress.

Getting a part time job is not a waste of time. I like how you call work a waste of time but spending time with friends is productive.

France isn't exactly a remote third world country, you can drive there. As for selling it on, yes we can easily eliminate dealing in legal drugs bought legally overseas, after all we never have any issues with illegal drugs do we?

I think over here you only get a studying allowance once your parent do not get child support anymore, or if you move out (and I think they still lose child support then).
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!

Exactly. Paying both at once is the hypocrisy.

Yes it is. And it also deprives the uneducated, dumb and drunken dullards you so deride from work hours at all, forcing them to live on the dole so you have someone to hate. It's a wonderful system, and blame has never been a zero-sum game!

Because of course setting taxes high enough to encourage tax evasion only leads to good side effects.

So you start shooting people! It's about time the brown people were exempt from the only shoot these people list, I mean sheesh, talk about a government-funded monopoly!

I guess it is 'unfair' that there are kids out there from wealthy families who do have it easy. But that's still not a 'good excuse' for the government to fund high school/uni students, especially high school students.

Don't worry about laziness and abuse, I think you can count on the college graduates to repay most of their 500 AUD/month in taxes over the course of their long and vastly improved lives.
That's one justification I've thought of but I still don't like the idea of it.

I was thinking about starting a thread about that in the silly forum, but then I figured, given the nature of the thread, what'd be the point? And so it goes.
