Default Scary stuff (or for those who care at all)

On Jan. 4th, I took GGT's advice and went to the doctor! Yeah, I know, I am worse than a man about going to doctors! He plopped my ass in a hospital bed, here in BFE, on Jan. 5th, when he discovered I weighed a whopping 65 pounds, where I continued to slide downhill. I was life flighted to Casper on Jan. 6th. Much of the following is from Mommymunchkin, The Kid, and various medical professionals, since I don't remember much from the first part of Jan. I remember bits and pieces of the critical care floor. I do know I was there for 3 days, and was a complete mess. Then they moved me to the medical floor. While there, I had various tests and scopes and x-rays and scans...all to no avail! On the 20th, I all of a sudden gained 25 pounds, all fluid around my legs and belly. I looked like hell, and felt worse yet. (The Kid said I waddled/waded/sloshed when I tried to walk on the 23rd. ) I guess, I really don't remember them being there that day, I told Mom and Kid to go ahead and come home that night, since I was up and walking and doing ok. Mom got a call about 4:30 Monday afternoon telling her to get her ass back to Casper as they had put me in ICU and I was not expected to be alive in the morning. I spent 3 days in ICU, none of which I remember. They drained 25 liters of fluid off me! I also had pneumonia, probably from the fluid pushing up from below, since I had just had a pneumonia shot on the 20th, and my lungs sounded good and clear on the 23rd. I also had a bacterial blood infection, but not the normal one that sweeps thru hospitals, so part of the reason for ICU was to isolate me. It was during this time I had my psychotic break with reality. I had some crazy assed dreams, like some rogue church was using me for experiments and shit like that!

After they released me from there, I went back to critical care floor for either 5 or 6 days, not sure which. They had me pretty drugged up at the time, so my recollection is a bit dim! (Fentanyl is a wonder drug, along with morphine and vicodin, all mixed together at times! ) I do know I kept talking to Daddy, sure he was sitting beside me! They had me on some kind of anti-psychotic drug, but I am not sure what it was.

On either Jan. 31st or Feb. 1, they moved me back to medical. They began re-running tests and scans and scopes and x-rays. (Yay for doctors who refuse to quit! ) On Feb. 3rd, they finally had a diagnosis! Yes GGT...YOU WERE RIGHT! I have managed, over 31 years, to drink/drug myself into a pancreatic failure. It is treated by enzyme pills, and insulin if needed. The pancreas is a wonderful organ...it helps digest food so it can be absorbed into the system, and it produces insulin and keeps your blood glucose levels in line where they should be! I seem to respond well to the enzyme pills, and am now proud to say I am up to about 86 pounds! In my case, I seem to produce enough insulin for daily life, right up until the late hour of about midnight, then my blood glucose soars out of sight. I am currently only taking "rescue" insulin before bed, altho that may change in the future. I am also at a higher risk of pancreatic cancer, which might explain the earlier scare, so have to go be retested every 6 to 8 months.

The same day, I suddenly developed a "heart murmur" that the doctor wanted checked out. They scoped that on the 4th, and came back with a clean heart bill of health! I tried to tell the doctor that in times of medical or physical stress, I have had this all my life, but she was worried, so now we all know my heart looks "normal".

I was released on Sat. morning, Feb. 5th!

The other good thing about all this is, even with 31 years of smoking, my lungs don't look or sound too bad. My blood/oxygen level runs between 90% and 98%! One doc showed Mom and Kid my chest x-rays, while I was in ICU. He was amazed I was a "current" smoker, since, altho there was some scarring, my lungs looked very much like someone's who had quit 10+ years ago! Score 1 for genetics! Of course, 31 days in the hospital has pretty much ensured I have quit smoking! YAY...I am now gonna spend half as much money as on smokes, and my cable TV will be hooked up on Thur!

Luckily for me, Wyoming has a program where, if you are hospitalized for a month continuously, Medicaid will kick in and either help with or pay the bill. Since I am sure I owe Wyoming Medical Center, including life-flight, doctors, drugs, scans, scopes, x-rays and various and sundry other crap like the $3 box of rough kleenes, right around $1,000,000. Yep folks, you read that right! I haven't even been opening the bills, since I opened the life-flight one and it was $18,811.36. That almost gave me a heart attack, so quit looking for the moment. If Medicaid doesn't kick in for me, I will have to file medical bankruptcy, but not until they are done with all the follow-up visits and such. I should also have an MRI scheduled in the next couple of weeks, to check on my back! Hell's bells, might as well get it all done at once. One of the docs told me Sat. morning, well, we can schedule it for Mon. morning if you just want to stay over til then. Unfortunately, the weather sucked and my ride was already on the way!

What did I learn thru all this. Very simply...appreciate your friends and neighbors, you never know when you might need them. One lady here in the apartment building, who lives on SS, gave Mom a check for incidentals and gas in the amount of $200. One of the business owners gave Mom $200 cash for "whatever" and told her her bill at the store was "paid in full"...she owed over $100! Her boss let her have any day off she wanted/needed to be with me, with the agreement of the board of directors that Mom can make up any missed time as she can, so she doesn't lose any needed funds. Someone, I have no idea who, paid my rent for the next 3 months!

What else did I learn. Nurses are fabulous! Sure, you get a bad one once in a while, but I never did, in 31 days! Nurses are cursed at, yelled at for being 30 seconds late with meds, and generally treated like slaves...get me this, get me that, so this, do that. I tried to be my normal, easy-going, polite self, and say please and thank you. I must have done something right because, before I left, all of them had come to see me, hug me, and tell me they wished more patients were like me.

Sooo, no more Rule 12 violations for Munchkin, no more cigarettes for Munchkin...awww hell, they took away all my vices in a 1 month span of time!

    Thanks guys!

I guess we all know I never do anything half way...I either go to the edge or I don't go. Guess being a stubborn bitch helped in this case. Supposedly I told 1 doctor, whilst all drugged up and slurring my words, that I was too fucking mean and stubborn to die! He was the 1 who called Mom and scared her half to death. Messages like that should always be filtered thru a family member who does NOT have heart disease! Her boss said she thought Mom was gonna collapse right there in the office, then she started crying. Her boss drove her home, with someone else following for a ride back, and the 2 of them helped her into the house, helped Kid load her oxygen in the car, got her out to the car, and then took her to the station to get gas...on them!

Good thing you mad it through that.

    But $1,000,000? Hell...

Well I guess I'm glad you've alive and getting better now at least! What is the next step from here for treatment? Do you have cancer separately or has it been the pancreas all along?

Glad to hear you're still with us Munch, must have been a hell of a thing to go through for you and your family - its not easy seeing your loved ones so close to death.

I'm curious how anyone can honestly expect someone to stash away enough life savings to prepare for a moment like this. The bill for my dad was equally disastrous

Good luck with kicking the smoking completely, from what I've seen its a life long battle to quit.
But I want to know more about these dreams!

Everyone who jumped my shit for asking how we would know when munchie kicked it can now kiss my ass.

Glad you got things checked out, munch. And I hope you find available support systems for being on the drink/drug wagon.

Easily a million. Consider the room costs of somewhere between $1200 and $1500 per day, + 3 full and 1 partial day in ICU, isolation, too many blood tests to count, 2 colonoscopies, 2 scopes down my throat to look at my innerds, a scope to look at my heart, 50+ x-rays, all the people needed to read the results, occupational therapy, physical therapy, 4 infectious diseases people, 4 respiratory therapists, 4 hospitalists, (all these people work 12/7 for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks off) 2 gastroenterologists and who the hell knows how many drugs were given. If you a start adding all those costs, along with the life-flight, a crew of 3, plus 2 ambulance rides...1 to airport here and 1 into Casper, (they took me by plane because the wind was too vicious for the helicopter) and any other incidentals, it's not hard to add up to a million in costs!

I don't have any cancer at the moment. If I get it, it will probably be in the pancreas. I guess an organ that has shut down is more suceptable to cancer. As of right now, the treatment is the pills and the insulin. That will be the life-long treatment, unless I go for the transplant option. It was thrown out there that I would be a good candidate for a transplant since I have had only 5 illnesses that required doctor's care in the last 20 years. (He didn't count the asthma attacks or the oooooopppppssss I just fell on my face again...splat visits!)

So far, I have been smoke-free (still on the second stage of the patch) since Jan. 6th. I didn't even start up again when I first got home. I have a full, unopened, pack in the freezer. I am waiting to find someone who smokes Camel 99's to give them to! I have already given away all my Black Velvet, Carolan's, and wine!

I only remember bits and pieces, and trust me, they are NOT good. I was positive that a church here in town, Crossroads Ministries, was trying to kill me, was refusing to allow me my right to refuse medical treatment, was trying to make me diabetic by giving me insulin when I didn't think I needed it, and was trying to make me go into cardiac arrest by thinning my blood out too much. I do know I had to be restrained in ICU, so that accounts for part of it! Why the hell I thought these people would be trying to kill me, I have no idea. Hallucinations fucking suck!

The Kid knows about TWF, and my password, so I'm pretty sure he would have let everyone know I was gone. At least, he said he would!

I already have an appointment, set up by ME last week, with the local drug/alcohol counselor here on Thurs. afternoon. Since I know the lady, and trust her, I think I will be ok. If not, the thought of going thru that shit ever again is enough to deter me from drinking! The counselor in Casper suggested AA, but NOTHING is anonymous in BFE! Hell, just by the cars parked on the street by the Congregational Church on Wed. and Sat. nights, I can tell you who goes! Plus people here have BIG mouths sometimes!

I am feeling pretty good today, altho I still tire very easily. I seem to have a bit more strength every day, and the tiredness is getting to be less and less. I went out again today and walked around downtown, (damned icy streets, lucky I didn't bust my ass) taking care of business. I was walking no less than 2 miles a day in the hospital, so am trying to keep up with my walking! Exercise seems to keep my blood glucose from spiking as badly as it has been. But, I know I was one sick Munchkin, and I still need to take it easy for a while.

We have a thread about addictions.....read it and weigh in. Some (like Lewk) are convinced that all it takes to turn a new leaf is to decide to give up an addiction, and remain determined. IMO he underestimates the power of chemicals to re-wire the brain, let alone how it impacts the life style with acquaintances, friends, favorite haunts and past-times that revolve around (or at least include) those very chemicals. The temptations can be overwhelming, even more-so when they come attached to people and having fun.

And no, munch, it doesn't give me any satisfaction when you said I was right about your symptoms related to liver disease, or your dire medical need. Just glad you finally got the care you need and deserve, from people who can give you that! (You probably don't remember calling my home phone while you were in the hospital, and leaving a strange disjointed message.)

I wondered where you been. Glad to hear you're doing better. No matter what GG says about addiction, no matter what cessation program you use, if you decide to stick with it and remain determined to do so (meaning follow through), you can move past the hard part of quitting in short order. Good luck.

OMG, I hate to admit it but I kinda agree with Lewk! *runs to hide in corner* I have always felt that a person could, with enough willpower, kick any habit! I have quit drinking before, once for as long as 5 years. This was NOT court ordered or anything, I was just tired of working 2 jobs so I could afford booze. Then I made the decision to start drinking again. The human mind plays a huge role in addiction, if you think you are addicted or can't quit something, then you won't be able to do it. If you think (know) you can quit any time, then you don't have a problem with quitting. I chose to leave 1/2 of a drink on the bar, on Christmas Eve, and haven't had a drink since. No counseling, just quit. Then was in the hospital, so obviously I couldn't drink. I came home, gave away what booze was in the house, and haven't wanted/craved/needed a drink. I think some of us are hardwired to be able to kick so-called addictions easier than others. Some people feel they need the crutch of a counselor or AA or rehab, and some people prefer not to lean on an imaginary crutch that will make you fall over after while. Of course, we have discussed this before and most here think everyone needs that imaginary crutch, simply because they need it. I have always found it easier to quit something if I do it alone, or with the help of friends, than if I have a counselor. Guess I'm a stubborn, independent Munchkin!

But you should get some satisfaction, since your pushing is a big part of why I went to the doctor in the first place! Of course, I still take my pain meds, and now about a dozen other things, daily. I suppose that means I am still an addict, even tho they are all legal and doctor prescribed for specific things.

Yes, I remember calling your house. I was just curious as to whether you were completely buried in snow and ice, or just sorta! Was watching the news and saw that huge storm headed your way! While the message might have been disjointed, (Fentanyl is a wonderful drug! ) I was just worried about you. Ya know, I spent a lot of time lying in that fucking bed, or sitting in that recliner, and had a lot of time to worry about my friends who were getting hammered yet again by old man winter!

Sometimes, living in BFE has it's drawbacks too! Ok, I admit it!

The local (very small) drug store here doesn't regularly stock my enzyme pills. I can understand that, since it appears I am the only person in town that takes them. BUT, I ran out yesterday, after taking my breakfast dose. I had an appointment with the local doctor (who is now in charge of my medication so I don't have to travel to Casper to get refills) for yesterday afternoon, so wasn't too worried. Then, when he called the drug store, I found out the pills wouldn't be here until today after 2PM. St least the doctor had told them to give me a 30 day supply (300 pills) with 2 refills, so I can now monitor when I am getting low and tell the drug store to order them.

In addition to supplying the needed enzymes for digestion, they also seem to give my pancreas a rest so it can produce enough insulin that I am good for the majority of the day. (For some reason, usually between 10PM and midnight, my blood sugar spikes and I need to take some insulin before bed. Of course, once a day isn't bad, considering many people need 4 to 6 shots a day, or one of those pumps!) So, without the pills, my pancreas was not able to produce as much insulin yesterday, meaning I had to take 3 shots. Yes, I realize I am lucky it produces any insulin at all, but I am especially delighted I don't have to have too many regularly scheduled shots!

Since I am waiting to hear from the state as to whether I qualify for Medicaid *keep your fingers crossed for me* I have been having to put all these meds on Mommymunchkin's bill at the drugstore. I have already racked up over $1000 in meds. Just the insulin pens were $260!

All in all, I am feeling pretty good! I still get very tired very easily, and am shaky at times, but I suppose that's a side effect of being in the hospital, laying in a bed or recliner, for 31 days. Mom and I are going to start walking the halls at the high school on Monday. I discovered if I walk about a mile a day, my enzyme pills work better, and I feel better. Since it's way too icy and cold to walk outside (which I prefer, got bad memories of high school) the schools let people walk their halls. The elementary/middle school is all flat, while the high school features 4 stairways, unless you stay on the main floor. I will start on the level, and work my way up to the stairs. I have noticed I lost a lot of strength in my legs. I probably should have had the physical therapist at the hospital walk me on the stairs there, but I never thought about it. I still try to walk to the post office and a couple blocks down town every day, but the weather is against me.
