Well, at least in liberal democracies your participation in government and its functions is voluntary in the sense that you can choose to go with another service provider. It just takes some time and money, but what doesn't? And in the same liberal democracies one has about as much say on what the government does as what huge corporations do, so.

It's a lazy argument on both sides, I know.

When auto insurance was voluntary, plenty of people didn't buy coverage. Worked fine until an accident, and they couldn't pay damages. Off to court they'd go, being sued to pay for car repairs and/or physical injuries and medical costs, defending against liability or fault. Law or no law, it ended up in the legal system.

Fines and taxes are taken at gun-point in the US, in gold coins, with a mother and 2.1 children crying in the background. It's like in the olden days when the local lord's tax keepers came and took some lambs and pigs and grain from your cot, the US is just so weird about taxation that way.

Now what you could've asked was how often Enoch does business with Blackwater or any other company in the security business, to which he'd respond with "most companies aren't in that line of work" or similar. Which of course ignores that his ideology would hold that the major functions of government, one being holding people at gun-point, should be out-sourced to private companies. But this all hinges on the idea that people have to be held at gun-point in the first place, an idea which the extreme right and extreme left both deny for the opposite reasons. C'est la vie.

I don't know of very many libertarians who support outsourcing the police force to private companies. It certainly isn't on the party platform.

And there's also the bizarre fallacy about the moral difference between holding someone at gunpoint and allowing someone shot to bleed to death, but that's just way too polarizing to discuss.

I wonder whether the libertarian camp would split at that point between those who consider children property and therefore sacrosanct, and those who would give all the same rights to toddlers as they would to everyone else.

*shrug* I am exposed to some thinkers, mostly US and minority Finnish, whom I'd label under the umbrella of libertarianism (without their dissent), I can't really do much else than go with what I see. I don't think this has to have any bearing on our discussions any more than what left-wing thinking you're seeing, and if I paint you with an ideological brush you disagree with I am quite happy to accept your displeasure.

I don't see how. I do realize I aggregate the extreme opinions of the libertarian mind-set because it serves my own purposes (and pleasure), but I am not myopic enough to believe other kinds of libertarian (such as yourself, apparently) exist. I am perfectly willing to discuss politics with you on a person to person level and not consider you some childish caricature of libertarianism, but I fail to see how parading the obvious failings of the extreme right is holding intellectual blinders. Certainly I'm the first person around to mock the failings of the extreme left.

I realize libertarianism doesn't really fit neatly into the left-right axis but nothing these days really does, so bear with me.

Q: If adults shouldn't be having sex with 12 yr olds, and legal brothels in the US wouldn't hire a 12 year old prostitute.....would it be okay if they accept a 12 yr old "client"? How about if the kid's father brought him for sexual services, with parental consent?
