Thread: What made you go WTF today?

Googling "3am Insomnia" gave me this from Wiki:

Segmented sleep, also known as divided sleep, bimodal sleep pattern, or interrupted sleep, is a polyphasic or biphasic sleep pattern where two or more periods of sleep are punctuated by a period of wakefulness.

Discovered in a wide variety of early documents by A. Roger Ekirch, a historian at Virginia Tech, segmented sleep is found in modern non-industrialised societies, medieval, and early modern Europe. Segmented sleep is also particularly common in the winter.[1]

This period of wakefulness was often only semi-conscious, as the French term dorveille implies (see Etymology). It was highly valued in medieval Europe as a time of quiet and relaxation. Peasant couples were often too tired after a long day's work to do much more than eat and go to sleep, but they would wake later on to talk and have sex.[2] People would also use this time to pray and reflect,[3] and to interpret dreams, which were more vivid at that hour than upon waking in the morning,[4] and even to visit. This was also a favorite time for scholars and poets to write uninterrupted.

The human circadian rhythm regulates the human sleep-wake cycle of wakefulness during the day and sleep at night. Due to the modern use of electric lighting, most modern humans do not practice segmented sleep, which is a concern for some scientists.[5] Superimposed on this basic rhythm is a secondary one of light sleep in the early afternoon (see siesta) and quiet wakefulness in the early morning.

There is evidence from sleep research that this period of nighttime wakefulness, combined with a midday nap, results in greater alertness than a monophasic sleep-wake cycle.[citation needed] The brain exhibits high levels of the pituitary hormone prolactin during the period of nighttime wakefulness, which may contribute to the feeling of peace that many people associate with it. It is in many ways similar to the hypnogogic and hypnopompic states which occur just before falling asleep and upon waking, respectively.

The modern assumption that consolidated sleep with no awakenings is the normal and correct way for human adults to sleep, may lead many people to approach their doctors with complaints of maintenance insomnia or other sleep disorders. Their concerns might best be addressed by assurance that their sleep conforms to historically natural sleep patterns.[6]

I got shafted by a lazy accountant back in the late 90's, the first I knew about his fuck up was in 2000 when I received a notice from the Tax Department that I owed a substantial amount of tax plus a penalty plus interest and I had 21 days to pay and it was December the 4th!

I made a mountain of calls, met with a Tax Clerk, and pleaded my case repeatedly that I had supplied ALL the correct information to my fucking CPA and he managed to miss a handful of documents which radically changed my tax for that year AND the next. There was nothing I could do but pay the money and if I missed the due date it was sent to a collection agent that would then charge me even more.

I had no recourse with the CPA because I signed the document - not the CPA, which is obvious because only the claimant (me) CAN sign the fucking document but we PAID the CPA good money to CALCULATE the FUCKING THING! I managed to raise the money but had the worst fucking Xmas for our family and at the time we had young kids of our own but also nephews and nieces etc.

Sorry, even after a decade I get angry about how much that summer (and Xmas) was ruined by a snivelling little bean counter.

That sucks! Thank god my tax returns so far are extremely simple I do know that over here you can request late payment if you have a dispute, e.g. if you want to challenge them you don't have to pay until it's settled.

I can file for an extension as well, but there is no way to come up with the money in that time anyway.
    Oh, man termite!

See, thats another issue that I am waiting to see how it pans out.
A previous accountant, whom I dumped, because he wouldn't return my calls, changed me to an S-Corp. I got the letter well after I dumped him, that I was accepted as an S-Corp. My current accountant knew this, and they had the letter of confirmation when I did my taxes with them last year, it's staple to all the paper from the tax packet. He claims he didn't know I was an S-Corp. *sigh* So my friend from the old job came in to help, and she was helping me gather my tax stuff to send. She asked if I filed some S-Corp form that was due in a week. I had her call my accountant. They said I didn't need to file it. They argued. We had a meeting at the accountants office. He said they (the gubernant) didn't know I exist, so filing that wasn't important. But prior to the meeting, I got a letter from the IRS that my accountant tried to dissolve the S-Corp, and if I give them permission, I had to file another form to let them act on my behalf. WTF? So now we are filing forms for the S-Corp stating no activity, and filing a Schedule C, like last year. My accountant still wanted to dissoilve the S-Corp, and he said it isn't beneficial to me until the business is grosses 200-250K. Later I talk to the actual guy that does my taxes and told asked him, if he looks at my business trends, and the fact that I am going to start advertising for retail work (2 to 3 times my wholesale pricing) that I may very well hit that mark this year. So he said we should keep the S-Corp. *sigh* So now I wait and see if I will get hit with a $1500 fine for not filing that form in January.

It burns my ass that the Accountant (owner of the business) blamed me for not telling him I was doing so well. I don't fucking know what doing well is, in the grand scheme of things. He had called mid year and asked how I was doing, but it was like a cordial conversation, and I told him I was busy and working many hours, but he never asked for numbers, never asked to send him my quickbooks file...

In the meeting, my old co-worker was amazed at how dismissive the acountant (owner of the firm) was, and how belittling he was. I didn't really pick up on it, but in looking back I see it. After the meeting she told me to dump him and find another. But then we play this game all over. How do you find someone you can trust, and knows what they are doing, when you don't know anything about this stuff to begin with? I mean this guy was highly reccommended to me to begin with. He specializes in small business. It's so frustrating.

So Firefox kept crashing on me this morning, so I decided it was time to try IE again, and decided I'd try Chrome as well.

    I like IE9 so far.

Chrome is insanely fast. The weird screen when you open it showing you your most visited sites is stupid, though, so if I can't get rid of it there's no way I'd use that browser. I'll fuck around with it again later or tomorrow, though.

Somewhere in the middle of this I downloaded the new Firefox, and it is leading to why this is in the WTF thread.

Why are all the browsers trying to be the same? They just keep integrating the exact same features. And why in the hell do they think I would want my search box in my address bar? (Firefox, at least, skips that baffling development)
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

And nighttime nursing from the prolactin. That hypnogogic state can be really great, the awareness of falling into sleep while falling asleep.

Bitter, I think they allow you to pay penalties over time, and can add it to next year's estimated payments. *But confirm that with a CPA*

Why wouldn't you? Either you type in a web adress or a search term. As browsers can reliably distinguish between the two, there's no actual need for two different places to put stuff in.

Because I don't like how cramped and multipurpose they are making everything by default (while still attempting to include everything under the sun). Some of my irritation may go away after I adjust to whichever browser I wind up using (or I'll find options to readjust it to how I want it).

^google chrome does have some issues with its all in one bar. hiding the http part messes up ftp stuff for some people, and when you use it to search, if the first term ends in a domain suffix (like .com .org etc) it limits that search to just that website. Not to common, but if you're looking for coupons to a company that includes that .com in their name, it messes you up (example, buy.com coupons)

Cleaning up and organizing my games, I discovered I have 18 different Nintendo handheld Pokemon games, all of them the direct "gotta catch them all" titles, no spin offs.

    18 titles. God dammit Nintendo.

For April Fools Reddit let their users infect each other. You could send anyone a "mold" spore that would put a message on their screen for the day, and the more mold you got, the harder it was to use the site. To the point that you could only post messages like "MMMPHH!"

So basically, they turned the whole day into a rape/STD joke....

OMFG!! Lost Springs actually grew! For many years the population was 1. I guess Leda finally got someone else to move to town!

LOST SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming town of Lost Springs can finally count on the Census to get its population correct: Four, not one.The Casper Star-Tribune reports that the Census Bureau somehow missed four other residents of the town when it counted only one person in 2000.The cause of that mistake wasn't clear. Leda Price, who lives on the west side of the 1-block Main Street, jokes that officials must have counted only her side of town. The 2010 Census, however, got it right this time when it found and counted all four of Lost Springs' residents. The newspaper reports that since the 2000 survey, two residents died but a newcomer moved in.The state highway department says it will change the town's population on signs.

Anon been getting crazy these past 24 hours or so. They turned their LOIC towards Sony to protest the heavy handed way they're attacking geohot (guy who cracked open the PS3 DRM), Sony's general distrust of consumers, and how they are slowly continuing to limit consumer rights. So yeah, the PSN goes down, the Sony websites go down. Been this bad all week.

But now, they've splintered, and one of the groups have made it a tad more personal. Treating the idea of seeing how much information they can dig up as some sort of game. Seem to be going after all the top Sony employees, pulling up addresses, phone numbers, where they shop, what they order, kids, schools, even how tall they are. They were getting pizzas delivered, they're calling private numbers, they're even garbage binning them. That is some seriously committed work.

Its a hilarious clusterfuck of bad decisions and one-up manship; I'm waiting to see if they're able to dig up anything thats even remotely as damaging as the HBGary ordeal.

Sounds strange, but I'd almost welcome my parent's basement. It would be frustrating, but would at least hold a potential of 'getting out' of something, and therefore hold out hope. With a fall-back in case things didn't work out. Thinking I could always Go Home used to mean a lot, when I was younger.

Now that I'm the parent (with the basement) there's a sense of urgency and futility. No room for escape and no respite, either. Not feeling too safe in my own abode, because I can't maintain the house and land all by myself, but can't/won't ask my children to "take care of me" either. And there's no refuge of Going Home, no mom or dad to take me in, or help me or my kids if needed. No Other Home or sense of safe place if things get hairy.

WTF when did life begin to look so dire

Iceland again rejected the deal struck with The Netherlands and Britain. That means the case will now move from a negotiated settlement to a court case. A court case that probably will have an outcome much worse than the rejected deal. I mean; how stupid can these people get. Do they really think they can vote away their international debts?
    Congratulations America

"Who'd you think you are, Joe Stalin?"
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

SYDNEY, Australia — When booze and a man fell off the back of a sport utility vehicle Sunday in Australia, passengers retrieved the alcohol but left their fellow rider on the road to die, according to police quoted by a national news agency.

The 31-year-old man from Rochester, Victoria, died after striking his head on the road, according to an Australian Associated Press story published by The Sydney Morning Herald.

The man fell out of the vehicle as it turned from Maude Road onto Nap Nap Road in Maude early Sunday in New South Wales. Several passengers in the rear of the ute and the driver did nothing to help him, AAP said.

But they did stop to pick up the fallen cartons of alcohol before driving off, police told AAP.

Um, I just woke up and I was in the living room, on the couch, holding the baby.

Have no idea when I got up and got her.

She's been having teething issues and so I've had to get up a few times the past few nights and rock her back to sleep.

But this time I have no idea when I got out of bed, picked her up, decided to walk into the living room and plop on the couch.

I feel weird, like I had an out of body experience but inside my body.

    Did I sleepwalk? WTF?

I'm really scared. Thank goodness we were on the couch, and I hadn't fallen on her or something.

    WTF?!?!?!?!?!

  26. #1496
Sleep deprivation! If she still takes naps, you should nap when she does. Teething is a hard time unless she's a thumb-sucker.

  27. #1497
I don't even want to go back to bed. What if next time I'm not so gentle?

I am tired today, but it's not like I didn't get 8 hours of cumulative sleep last night....

But you've had cumulative sleep deprivation over months. I hope you've gotten advice from your doctor about PPD, and they recommended something for you?

  29. #1499
No, things have gotten better and I hate my old doctor, so trying to find a new one at this point.

I just have not had a sleepwalking issue since I was 7 or so. My husband doesn't even remember when I got up. It's so weird, I feel crazy. Like did it even happen now?

  30. #1500
cat, does your husband ever get up in the night when K wakes up? Or is it always your job to do that "because he works"?
