Thread: crime

    Default crime

I've been informed that this question is probably not as complicated as I thought. I thought that dealing with crime involved, among other things, the following:

fair trials with adequate legal representation, proving culpability, proving intent, delivering adequate and just punishment, enabling appropriate rehabilitation, preventing future crimes, giving rapists free meat meals.

Have I missed anything? Have I included too many things? Do you guys have any thoughts on how to accomplish these things?

    thanks in advance

If it isn't clear, this thread isn't entirely in good faith. I still believe that dealing with crime should encompass almost every activity on that list, from punishment to prevention. I even believe in the importance of lawyers. I even have opinions on how that list may be applied to a forum as opposed to a state with courts and jails.

    Good luck Minxypoo!
I could have had class. I could have been a contender.
I could have been somebody. Instead of a bum
    Which is what I am

    I aim at the stars
    But sometimes I hit London

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

We actually brushed on this topic with a friend the other night in a discussion about Osama and the US celebrating his death. I decided it was better to agree to disagree than to aggressively argue my position, but I did articulate my discomfort with involving vengeance in a justice system.

But on the other hand, public opinion seems to be very vocally disappointed with Finland's relatively lax sentencing policy. I can certainly understand the feelings of all the people involved in last year's Pride when their attackers only got probation. Or the raped party when the rapist doesn't sit 'behind bars' more than a year. Can this feeling accumulate into a lack of trust in the justice system, and the security of the citizenry? We don't have unusually high rates of crime, but can that change as a result?

Back on the first hand, though, it seems that a significant segment of that vocal disapproval would like to see brutalization of convicts, not much unlike the glee US residents so often display in discussions on jail-house rape. Can violence aid rehabilitation in some way? Is there a moral difference between satisfying the emotional desires of a wronged party wishing to see the wrong-doer beaten, versus the wrong-doer satisfying his own emotional desires in the original violent altercation? And does anyone really think it's at all wise to externalize the violent brutalization part of a justice system on the prisoners themselves?

Why is everyone assuming that the celebration is over the fact that bin Laden was killed and not because he was captured? Do you really think the celebration would be any different if he was captured alive? So what's immoral about celebrating the capture of a mass murderer?

When you achieve one of your goals it's natural and expected to be happy about it. I can see that we should be respectful of the fact someone died, but we should be able to rejoice that this will hurt our enemies, symbollically/morale wise if nothing else, (my bet is it did more than that in the short run as far as operations are concerned). I think the War on Terror is really a war or idealogies, and sometimes there is no way to deal with extremist idealogies, I think most of the time their is though.
