When you're signed into gmail it has the additional hover text to +1 this as *insert gmail account name and address here*...

I like +1 in general, and I think this is a pretty neat implementation.
Though candidly, I don't think I will be allowing threads here to appear in my public +1 feed (would be the same with a Facebook Like button).
I don't know about connecting gmail to this... publicly? Spam much...
The link goes the other way. If we know your gmail address, we can see what you've +1'd, if you allow it. There's no way to go from the +1 to your g-mail account.
It's up to you, though. Obviously, nobody's forced to use the feature.
I noticed the +1 the other day, and clicked on it because I had no idea what it meant. I wondered if we'd started a new thread rating kind of thing. But every thread had a +1. The g-mail description sounded sort of stupid (and I don't have a g-mail account), kind of like a Facebook or Twitter thing. Why isn't that sort of option at the bottom, or at each member's custom profile, instead of standing out there at the top, and in the OP title?
Oooh don't forget to add another button at the bottom so that we can give it a second thought after reading through a page
