    Default Aggression

Is aggression an effective way of dealing with people? If it doesn't work in interpersonal relationships, how could it work in international relationships?

    World English Dictionary
    aggression (əˈɡrɛʃən)

    — n
    1. an attack or harmful action, esp an unprovoked attack by one country against another
    2. any offensive activity, practice, etc: an aggression against personal liberty
    3. psychol a hostile or destructive mental attitude or behaviour

[C17: from Latin aggression-, from aggrēdi to attack]

    Edit

Forgot to mention, this being in General Chat and all....personal opinions and anecdotes welcomed. No sources, polls or academic proof required. Just a conversation. Post from your hip, gut or heart.

Stop fighting! That's no way to get along! Now shake hands, and figure out how to get along without fighting....before you're both grounded!

Posting in my own thread, whee!

Aggression is a strange phenomenon. Especially for kids, particularly young boys. Don't hit each other, go outside and "play"....turns into them setting up garden bunkers for their GI Joes to play War, digging trenches for firecrackers to blow up plastic action figures.

"Games" are almost always aggression-related, pick a side, teams will fight to win. Be aggressive, whether it's attacking a ball or aiming a squirt gun. Non-contact sports try to use the same metaphor by bunching themselves into "team" competitions---let's beat the shit out of them, they won't know what hit them---say the swimmers and gymnasts (or video game players).

Maybe that's why I've always preferred individual sports in the Olympics. Or absolutely love artistic "team" unity in things like musical bands, orchestras, symphonies, ballet and dance troupes, who compete with themselves and their last best performance.

Depending on what you want, the scenario I guess, the extent to which you take the aggression, and the temperment of who you are dealing with, aggression can be very effective. It can also be very dangerous. The best annecdote I could post here, and the most heinous situation I have ever had the misfortune to be aquainted with, is inappropriate to post at this time. But generally, I don't know of anyone who relates interpersonally with liberal use of aggression that I would want anything to do with (and I know a few of these folks) - or who is able to maintain normal interpersonal relationships. But maybe that's how they like it. Everyone around them is miserable and fucked up, but they're apparently getting what they want. Sick, really.
