In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
Because "member of society" is defined in ethnic or religious terms, and not in terms of nationality. People are equally loathe to give welfare to someone who looks different to them whether they just entered the country or had ancestors that entered it a century ago.
A vast majority of charities are local, so I would imagine so...
Are you confusing your government with your people? You have a far-right party in your parliament, and support for welfare has decreased at roughly the same rate as the number of immigrants in Sweden increased (and your far-right party at least doubled its share of the national vote in each election since 1998). I wonder if the two are related.![]()
Hope is the denial of reality

Earth Joker and I had a tangent on caring for elder family members. Plus elders supporting their kids. Intergenerational "support". In the, uh, well I can't recall the thread right now. Maybe it was about the Euro? I do think the cultural / social expectations make a big difference. National Health Care and pensions in Europe at least give families more choices or options; whether to let granny age in place with professional help, have her move in with extended family (and still receive professional visiting help), or move to a decent group or long-term facility (without the horror stories of urine-soaked beds, septic bed sores, abusive care-takers, or slowly starving to death because no one notices the meals aren't eaten by those tied in soft restraints).
As far as I know, there are no legal requirements for parents to care for adult children, and none for adult children to take care of their parents. But maybe it depends on the state? There are complicated legal precedents, though. Like estates being used primarily for care before given to an heir. That can mean nothing more than "making granny look broke" before she can get into a decent facility where her SS, SSDI, Medicare and/or Medicaid can pay $30,000/month for her care, without tapping into assets left to her heirs. One of the so-called 'protections' is that no one should be forced to sell their primary home in order to qualify for long-term care using government assistance. But that's not really true.
Anywho, if there's any data showing corporations donation ratios (local vs foreign) it'd be on their web sites, I suppose. Gates was mentioned for his philanthropies in other countries, but he also practically built Seattle, Washington's public transit system, museums, and donated heavily to public education. Well, Microsoft money anyway. Detroit, Michigan once had tons of donations from GM and Ford. Schools, libraries, community centers, hospital wings and research centers. During their hey days, tons of Michigan cities benefited from their corporate largesse and donations. Including jobs training centers and trade colleges, and hefty endowments to public K-12 schools. (When the auto industry tanked, do did those communities.)
