Thread: Alabama Town Offers 'Church Or Jail' Sentencing Choice

  1. #31
Oh, I'm starting to get the big picture now. Cain was a "boarding school" student?! One of those kids who hates their immediate environment, but only slightly less than being "sent home" to mom and dad?

Not even close, but feel free to keep thinking that and proceed to base some silly psychobabble about me off of it, should that make you happy.

...and all of that from the obvious observation about the similarities between timeouts and prison...

So you weren't a boarding school student? Don't blame me if your CV isn't so clear. Why don't you just come clean and tell us your history? What are you worried about, in this forum?

I think people base their opinions about correctional behavior (largely) based on their own histories and what worked, or didn't work, for them as individuals. Too bad that means subjective and life-specific knowledge that doesn't translate to entire populations or societies, huh.

What a boring and pointless waste of time that sounds like, particularly given your track record for total inaccuracy even on the few details of my life I have shared on many occasions.

It's a "why bother" issue, not a fear issue. And, if you're looking to motivate me, well I like [pleasant] drugs, sex and money... just FYI, might wanna tuck that away for the future, should you desperately need or want to motivate me - a redheaded Irish escort carrying a couple bottles of Jameson and having her naughty bits covered by large denomination bills seems like an easy way to combine all three.

Oh, pffft. If that's what you wanted to know, you coulda just asked. Carrots work on me, sticks don't. So, I don't base my theories on correctional behavior about what's worked on me, because nothing does/has, for a variety of reasons, the most pertinent being that government is slow and stupid, and I'm fast and smart. <shrug> So good luck with the whole behavioral engineering thing, when you rely on an organization that's beholden to the whims of large numbers of morons and contracts its legal enforcement activities out to a group that actually prevents people from joining based on being too intelligent. [Huh, I need to find a good sneering smilie.]

You got all that from my asking your childhood history? Wow, good job?

I don't mean this as an insult, but a correction/suggestion: Most people worth their salt have a fourth motivation, information. It's just as wired into the intelligent mind as is sex, and over the Internet it's probably the easiest of the four to trade. Unless there's USB meth peripherals and I haven't kept up with the times, I'm bad with that one, sticking to the classics.

Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

If anything, we are more cynical with our view that religion may or may not be a scam.

Candidly, I would prefer the government not be in the business of the government deciding what is and isn't a "real" religion.

"more cynical"? That's a joke, right? You've got bible-thumpers and zealots in your government galore.

It's not like John Ashcroft ever existed; Loki proved this to me scientifically. The US laughs in the face of religion, not like us stupids back in the Old Continent.

Also, all of the GOP hopefuls are crazy insane religious, but who cares huh, so long as there's a crazy Kenyan muslim negro in the White House? Gotta protect the proper religions.

    Do you actually believe that?
Hope is the denial of reality

I think it has been a good few solid months without you professing to anything you genuinely believe in, so I am not sure what exactly would motivate me to answer your question.

It is possible that, say, the Texas man simply hates women and isn't motivated by a Christian dogma, but the difference to us, and particularly to the voters, is irrelevant. And he's the Serious Man in the hen-house.

    Just to pick an example.

I don't know what the NEIN NEIN NEIN man thinks about religion, but blacks tend to love Jesus. Michele is a theocrat. Paul is also deeply afflicted by Christian mores, though who is to say what he truly believes, the silly old man. Mittens, I don't recall off-hand what he thinks, but I'm guessing Mittens or The Serious Man are your hopefuls, so I guess you reckon Mittens isn't deeply religious?

You know Romney and Huntsman are not-especially-devout Mormons, right? And Perry's and Bachman's campaigns are stalled, right?

You think this makes them super-cynical about religion?

Or perhaps these are just politicians trying to get elected. I'll grant you that Bachmann is a religious nut, but to use the same label on the others ignores political reality as well as their own actions when in power. So sure, most of the GOP field is sucking up to the religious voters. You know why? Because they are a key Republican constituency, and these people want to get the Republican nomination. It's the same way that Democrats have to give lip service to support for the poor, protectionists, and unionists. Doesn't mean they actually believe most of what they say. Actions speak louder than words.

So The Serious Man simply hates women? How is that a merit?

Romney seems to be far more devout than would be normal this side of the pond. Huntsman I'd grant you except he clearly doesn't fall under the category of "hopefuls". Largely because of his views on religious issues.

It's more that he didn't have much of a national presence before the campaign, and he has views on gay marriage and global warming that aren't in sync with some other Republicans.

I've said it before I'll say it again, Cain, and Ron Paul come off as the two most intelligent and honest candidates. The rest come off as mainstream parrots...
I think we need Herman Cain and Ron Paul as vice presidents/adivsors to Barack Obama, that's our ideal situation right now. They have no real power but they can offer insights as situations comes up, because I like some of their comments, and they think for themselves (which is why they have non-mainstream ideas).

In what way is Romney devout? Does parroting the party line on abortion and gay marriage make one devout nowadays?

And Huntsman's lack of popularity has little to do with his religious views. He has no name recognition, which is a fatal flaw when you enter the race late. He's not particular adapt at fundraising, which is not good when you have no name recognition. He's not very charismatic and he's tainted, fairly or unfairly, for having worked for Obama. Even if he was a Christian fundy, he wouldn't be able to peel off the support of that group from Bachmann and Perry.

I was under the impression he was a Church-going Mormon. Why do I even know he's a Mormon, I couldn't tell you what (if any) branch of any religion eg Boris Johnson or let alone even David Cameron is. Its personal.

Because other people make a big deal out of politicians being anything other than one of the socially approved protestant sects, warranted or unwarranted.

Is that because everyone is more cynical about religion in the US?
The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done

I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun

It becomes an oddity about the candidate, and there is a (perhaps self-fulfilling) belief that anyone who isn't a 'standard protestant' is at a disadvantage in politics. As far as I can tell, it doesn't actually impact much these days, most people don't really give a shit, but the media still loves to point it out. Mormons being one of the groups for socially acceptable stigmatization doesn't help matters.

Catholics are happy because they believe in jaysus and Protestants are happy because they're not Catholic (or Jews, Muslims, or anyone else not blessed by the teachings of Martin Luther)...
