Does anyone here know any professional (or amateur) comedians?

If so, did you know them when they were younger, just joking around for family and friends? How did they branch out and hone their skills? Were they ever able to make a career of it, or was it the whole starving artist lifestyle that required a steady income, making their vocation more of an avocation?
