Thread: Buying a Car

    Default Buying a Car

Okay, minor Rule 12 here. But bear with me.

Let's say one was to buy a car to use for just one month. At the end of that month, they abandoned the car in the woods.

How could they go about purchasing the car and driving it around without insurance for that month?

Congratulations, you've reached the level of the average rural 15-year-old.

I like the priorities here though, evasion of insurance at the top of the list.

Just find some rural (or in the City, criminal) element who will pawn off some piece of shit to you that's not registered or insured, and drive around with it.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

I can't point out the numerous ways this could fail horribly and net you jail time. Even if you did pull it off you could still get a fine afterward...

Due to the population density of NY, unless he's driving around upstate, the likelihood of seeing a cop rapidly approaches 100% as you're out driving. Since NY also requires both front and rear plates, his likelihood of being pulled over on a daily basis is nearly 100%. A car needs to be registered and insured to have plates.

To be issued plates that are in a central registry somewhere, sure. But Joe Six-pack might have some old plates lying around that look just like the real deal, and so long as Dread doesn't drive around drinking Mo-hi-tos and doing coke off his gf's titties, he won't attract enough attention for anyone to actually run his plates.

craigslist, with plates stolen off a different and rarely used car
If you're really good, you may even be able to find someone to sell you a car with the previous plates still attached, a lot of people don't understand plates stay with the person and not the car

You know whats really dumb*? You can rent a car on Hertz for a month for less than $1500 for most of the cars there except the higher end ones like Cadillac (which are just slightly above $1500). It does not look like you need proof of insurance to rent a car.

*Its dumb because Dread didn't think of this cheaper, more legal alternative that doesn't result in either jail time or fines if he's caught.

You are, however, liable for damages to a rental car if not insured. Most insurance plans cover rentals. They will gladly steal your unborn children for the opportunity to insure you.

    Dread, don't be stupid.

We're assuming not getting into an accident, because if Dread gets into an accident with an unregistered vehicle with false plates, and no driver's insurance, he'd likely wind up with fines, jail time, and license suspension.

I have no doubt Dread is not really planning to do this (he's way to anal for that) but this came up in a chat over drinks and he couldn't let it go before going to bed.
    Congratulations America

Indeed, the license plate issue is the main one. I think OG is right about finding someone who would sell with the plates.

I also forgot to mention that going to Canada is [possibly] part of the plan. Which makes renting a car is less of an option. Plus it would [possibly] be a one way trip for the car. I posted that at 3:15AM? Jesus I have a headache.

I'm not worried about getting pulled over, I'm too conservative of a driver for this and I would be on roads with far too few people/police. But the inability to get plates without registering the car (which in turn takes insurance) is a problem unless I'm willing to steal someone else's plates (which is rather too far, I'm not really looking for jail time).

But there is a germ of something here.

Something you lot may find odd about me is that I have a particular level of knowledge about old Volkswagen Beetles. I can identify the year of a VW Beetle just by looking at it. I have decent knowledge of the workings. I once read tons of books about them. But I've never even sat in one, let alone drove one. But I have this sudden hankering to buy one on the cheap, get cut-rate insurance and garage it outside of the city for use in the summer.

    Anyone ever had/been in one?

Hertz serves Canada and has one-way options, unless you mean that you plan on totaling the car at the end of the trip. You're not planning an epic level of moron adventure like Alexander Superstupid here...except with a car...right?

Nah, something more grounded and delinquent was tossed-around over drinks last night.

Your drinking buddies must be pretty stupid if they think driving a un-registered car is a good idea.

My advice? Just rent one way, or take a bus.
    I enjoy blank walls.

The registration issue is the roadblock (which I brought up) to the main plan that started this whole thing (which I also proposed, while drunk). My friends don't know about car registration, insurance, etc. Most of them don't even have licenses.

But seriously, has anyone here ever owned a pre-1975 VW Beetle?

  15. #15
I've know a few people who did. There used to be a great hand-drawn book on how to do the maintenance yourself, easy engines like a lawn mower they said.

The plates will be a problem for you. It'll be considered an Antique or Historic Car with special plates (which also changes the emissions testing standards without a catalytic converter).

edit: this looks like the one: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...der_1566913101

Wait, are you going to abandon it in the woods, or garage it for summer use? And I doubt you could find a pre-75 bug "on the cheap". Even the ones with leaky radiators, rusted out floor boards, bald tires and ripped upholstery run ~$5,000 (around here) because they're collector's cars.

So the plan again is to purchase a highly conspicuous collectible car, drive it around unregistered, without insurance, and false plates that do not look like the kind of plates a vintage car would have? Then ditch it in the woods?

    ...really?

FYI, all cars entering Canada must have valid insurance and due to a deal with Homeland Security all Americans have their ID checked before entering Canada (passport). Upgraded surveillance also means all drivers and their vehicle license plates have their picture taken as well from both sides of the border and checked to ensure there are no warrants, etc.... If the vehicle license plate numbers do not match the car VIN, its off to jail you go. Since you are American you will no doubt be handed over to the American police. Don't bend over to pick up the soap.

Back in the early 80's (before most of you were born, lol) I took back a car to California from BC for Hertz and had it for 2 weeks, then got lucky and took back a car for them to B.C. Its been a while but I believe I only had to pay 20% of the regular rental and they covered the additional insurance and gas. Check with Hertz to see if they still do this as they usually have Canadian plated cars which need to be returned to Canada and they may pay people to take them back to Canada. Maybe you can make a deal to take one back and then bring a U.S. plated car back. Take the Canadian car up first, drive it in Canada for a bit, then drop it off and bring back the U.S. plated car and drive it in N.Y. for the rest of the month. This way it is all legal and above board, unless of course, you like jailhouse food.

Well, one year I was on a pick-up tournament team with a guy, Adam, who owned a pre-75 VW van, and we were figuring out rides from Seattle to the tournament in Vancouver. Flames painted on the sides (you know, coming out of the front wheel well, like a hot wheels car.) Also, the guy was a total stoner: dreadlocks down to lower back, scruffy Bob Marley chin beard, and stoner affect.

Since we were crossing a border, I decided to drive my own car with a few passengers. We passed Adam and his passengers at the border--they were pulled over, everything taken out of the car, and Canadian agents crawling over the interior. Wonder of wonders, they showed up at the tournament with no arrests. But the lesson is not to cross borders in a VW van with painted flames driven by a happy-go-lucky scruffy white rasta ultimate player who talks like a character from a Cheech and Chong movie.

Was a cool van though. Tournament was pretty brutal. We played 7 guys no subs all day, and I, as best player, was always guarding and being guarded by opposing best. Blech. We were silly. We had 15 players, and split it into two teams (Xs and Os, shirts being spray painted tic tac toe with either X or Os winning. Fortunately we didn't play each-other.)

OMG it's bigjimdavis! Long time no see! How the hell are you?

Dread, if you're looking for an "escapade" that has a hippie-ish flair, crossing into Canada with a beater car probably won't work. Times have changed. Either stick with northern Maine (Canadienesque), or go the backpacking route. Trying to walk across the border where there aren't checkpoints is still risky, but you could play the dumb New York urbanite who got lost.

wouldnt easier to simply rent a car, im sure they have those for cheaper prices.
or just buy one of the more older cars.

That's not delinquent, though. Seems he's looking for some kind of get-away-thrill. Maybe he'll come back to explain.....

Nono, as I was drunkenly hatching an idea I began to remember that I've long wanted a VW Beetle and began to look into the costs of that. Even though I have relatives in insurance and could get a good garage spot in an outer borough, I don't make the kind of money for a ridiculous waste of cash like a car.

But I wouldn't ditch it in the woods.

    Jim!

Well presumably they only check that on cars coming into the US, but the licence plate issue would definitely mess things up. Unless I went through one of the smaller checkpoints. But overall that's a very good point, leaving that kind of paper trail would be bad.

    How are you?

Well, we're not looking to violate international borders. Somehow that's over the line, no pun intended.

Been re-working the plan in a way that doesn't lead to the destruction and abandonment of an automobile. But not sure we can figure this out before it begins to get cold up there.

Dread...about a hundred years ago, I worked seismograph with a lady named Rosie (no pun) who owned a 1972 Beetle! That car would go where 4 wheel drive, 1 ton trucks wouldn't! It was obnoxious pink, and a hella good time!

As the resident jail-bird...I have to tell you that this is NOT something you really wanna do...drunk or not! Just believe that when the words "border crossing", "passport", or "homeland security" are involved, you do NOT wanna do it!
I don't have a problem with authority....I just don't like being told what to do!Remember, the toes you step on today may be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow!RIP Fluffy! 01-07-09 I'm so sorry Fluffster! No, I am not dead, just smelling bad and feeling like absolute shit most of the time. Thank God for oxycontin, cipralex and Sleeman's Honey Brown Lager. Working from home all the time now since the old legs don't work that well anymore. Having to deal with moron employees who ware complete screwups and try to rob us blind by giving their friends free booze and food and the fucking depression of dealing with a mother with advancing Alzheimer's is driving me nuts, literally. Thankfully the owner is fed up too and is working on selling all his restaurants and bar which will make me feel so much better so I can concentrate on on-line poker.

Laura and Sals, will try to get on messenger this weekend.

From http://wikitravel.org/en/Canada: "Drivers of American cars will need a certificate confirming that they carry enough public liability insurance ($250,000 in all provinces except Quebec, which is $50,000)."

From http://policechiefmagazine.org/magaz...sue_id=112008: "automatic license plate recognition technology has been in use in Canada for some time. The Canada Border Security Agency has been using a stationary application to read license plates of vehicles as they approach border guard booths. This allows guards to read pertinent information on the vehicles approaching the booths as well as their registered owners prior to having face-to-face contact with the drivers. " AFAIK, they also have access to info on American cars as well.

On the bright side Canadian jails serve better food than they do in the States and have cable TV as well.
