Default Tectonic Tremors In Virginia and NYC?

I didn't know the East Coast lived on what scientists often call a "tectonic clusterfuck."

That was fun! I texted my wife 'earthquake' from Baltimore, and she received it in Boston 2 minutes before the tremors hit.

    That is pretty cool.

Ack! I thought that my washing machine was exploding (the sewer guys are working down the street). Felt like a very lower chopper moving across my house. I wouldn't have known it was an earthquake until my mother called to say it happened at her house (a mile away).

My father called and calmly asked if I was alright. I said, yup. Then he said, "stop jerking off" and hung up. What the fuck man. I wish I were kidding.

    lol

I'm surprised it came up here. I felt it too, but since i was in the mountains the shaking was light; many people didn't feel it at all. My mother's school had to evacuate for precautionary reasons though; it was worse in NOVA apparently.

I was walking down a corridor of desks in my office. It took me a second to realize everyone was standing up and looking around. I was completely unaware. I think it's because I tend not to hold-on when riding the subway, so my balance on a moving floor is pretty deeply embedded in my subconscious.

I heard about it being felt in my city of residence just after I'd suspiciously jetted off to areas further west.

Smart money seems to be that there's apparently a lag involved in diving smitings, and I accidentally stumbled out of the way of God's wrath just in time, yet again.

Not nearly as exciting as it sounds, as I look out the window into... the exact, geographical middle of nowhere, though.

A guy I work next to proposed to his long-term boyfriend yesterday. I had to struggle not to make a joke about this being a consequence of allowing gay marriage in NY. Someone would have gotten offended.

Gosh, it sounds pretty lame that my china cupboard and dishes started rattling, and I couldn't figure out what was going on. At first I thought my cats were in the cupboard fighting each other, or Mr. Groundhog was in the attic. But nah, neither made sense. Then I wondered if street crews were using huge jack hammers or something.

Then my youngest son walked into the kitchen and said, "Did you feel that?" Then the other son wandered in and said, "Wow, my bed was moving, and I wasn't even____"

Very strange stuff. Could hear some home alarms going off in the neighborhood. Both cats slept through the whole thing.

They don't. So? Plate tectonics *and crustal deformation not directly related to the movement of plates* cover the whole world. There are faults everywhere. The "tectonic clusterfucks" simply have more stress and hence more activity.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"

Good thing, it would have opened you up to some retaliatory puns.

Apparently, the east coast is older and harder than the west coast. Our land is based in more stone than sand. We might experience fewer earthquakes than California or anyone on the west coat, but ours ripple farther.

Ours was a 5.8 or 5.9 and didn't do much damage to buildings, even those constructed long before modern technology. While Haiti's devastating earthquake was a 6.0.

Not true, it was a 7.0. That's an order of magnitude larger than a 6.0.

OK, Haiti's was a 7.0? No matter what level it was on the Richter scale, the nation was devastated. Combination of their sandy foundations and poorly-built structures that couldn't meet hurricane + tsunami standards. Does this make you feel more confident about potential US dangers?

AFAIK there was no tsunami at Haiti either, and the difference between 6 and 7 is huge. And now you're comparing Haitian building standards to the US? Not sure what point you are trying to make to be honest.

    A 7.0 releases something like 31 times more energy than a 6.0
Hell, a 6.0 is double the released energy over a 5.8.

According to wikipedia, a 6.0 is 15 kilotons of TNT, a 7.0 is 480 kilotons

Although I laughed, I don't even understand why you posted this in this thread, lol.

Dude, I was joking and being sarcastic. There are pictures mocking the entire even. I was merely hypebolizing.

The worst that happened here was some kid's shoe slipped off and a flurry of facebook updates were born in consequence.

Just that earthquakes are different, from coast-to-coast, because of local soil plus building engineering. Earthquakes don't kill people---falling buildings (or tsunamis) do.

If I had said that anywhere near my old Geo-systems teacher he would have immediately shipped me to the Eastern Front.
