Doesn't do Aimless much good, but AMC is showing the original Ghostbusters in theaters this Thursday and next Thursday.
So if you want to pay modern day prices for an awesome, but not so modern movie, there is your chance.

I second Pandorum...(I'm biased though...the intro tightey whitey scene REALLY grabbed my attention)

You can't go wrong with the Fifth Elementno matter how many times I watch it, it never gets old.
Oh and A.I. Fantastic movie, although not as appreciated or well received as it should have been. But it's one of those movies that will become a 'classic' in the future. Much like the Shining. I don't think many people liked the random 'twist' at the end, but I thought it wasn't so bad.
Agree with Nessie on The Thing (the original). But there's good (somewhat cheezy by modern standards) sci-fi stuff from ancient times. The original Godzilla, King Kong or Frankenstein flicks come to mind. Or the TV series Lost in Space (much better than the movie). Older movies like The Body Snatchers, and even Planet of the Apes are pretty good, too.

I was born in 1971 so I kinda grew up in that era where Sci-Fi was enjoying success with big franchise-type films such as Alien(s), Star Wars, Terminator(s) the Star Trek Universe(s), Back to the Future(s) and others (depending on how strict your Sci-Fi definition is) but everyone knows about them, they're mainstream.
Here are some smaller budget less popular movies that were gems in their own right :
Blade Runner -Classic early 80's sci-fi with Harrison Ford hunting down dysfunctional and dangerous replicants (androids).
Enemy Mine - Despite the campy sci-fi that may put you off at the beginning, it gets better. Louis Gosset Jnr steals the show from Dennis Quaid.
Outland - Sean Connery is the luckless career cop that is the new Marshall on Io trying to put an end to drug smuggling while his personal life falls apart.
Starman - Jeff Bridges is a visitor from another planet that takes the form of a young widows dead husband and then convinces her to ferry him half way across America to a crater in the middle of nowhere. Underrated film with good performances.
Explorers - I loved this movie (well most of it) when I was 14 or 15, though I haven't seen it for a long time and I do recall great disappointment with the ending I remember loving the concept of their mode of transport. One of those few films to feature the late River Phoenix.
The Last Starfighter - In 1984 video games were changing the world and this movie tapped into that cleverly when a kid that "clocks" the video game in his backwater home town gets recruited as a starfighter pilot! Fantastic stuff!I clocked many a video game back then with no such luck...

Hmm. There's Buckaroo Banzai if you want to go through a movie scratching your head and asking yourself if you're crazy. You could try Flash Gordan if you just hate yourself. And I confess I've always been partial to Howard the Duck because while it's bad, everyone knew it was and so they decided to just have fun with it.

I liked Cowboys and Aliens, though YMMV.
More of an action film without the horrible B-movie class acting that most action films have... but it contains aliens, which makes it sci-fi too.
