Kean's grounds and maintenance staff is paid between $28 and $45 an hour, with the average worker earning nearly $31 an hour, university officials said. The new vendor will pay at least $23 an hour plus benefits.

Don't get me wrong it sucks to be fantastically overpaid and then to lose that job. Considering the way Americans generally live (over their means, with significant amount of debt for 'wants') it is going to cause them significant financial hardship. But reality does have a place in the world. Unskilled labor earning upwards to $67 an hour? Really?

I also find it hilarious how obvious the union lies.

First is about housekeeping, second about grounds and maintenance staff, OG. Which would both be above minimum wage. On the flip side, I imagine those numbers are for full time staff, and the article doesn't mention whether the contacts allows those position to be replaced with lower paid part time and temp positions.

The numbers are wonky though - the savings that are claimed are bigger than what they currently spend on salaries for the workers they are firing.

housekeeping and maintenance are the same department here, so I guess I just lumped them together, plus the 3rd sentence in the article lumps them together anyway. It felt like the article was pieced together from several different quotes or bits.

They are both well above minimum thats for sure. I'm curious when those numbers for vendor qualifications were released, cause the union was quoted "last month", which could have them going with the worst case scenario before other details were released? Article also doesn't say how many out going or new positions are full or part time, or what $67 an hour entitled duty wise. Anything from senior department management, automatic pay raises, to that one guy who gets called in a few times a year with a cherry picker to trim the tree tops. Benefits could be night and day as well.

The school is requiring something. The vendor is stating they will actually pay above that starting at $23 instead of the minimum the school is requiring at $22.
