Easily mistakeable I suppose, but you'd think you'd know yer own flag well enough.

What I've never learned to figure out is how people can tell when the Union Jack is hung upside-down.

It's not mirror-symmetric about it's horizontal central axis.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

Hmmm I suppose if you were to compare one right next to t'other, it wouldn't be too hard to spot.

But on it's own, I can't tell. I don't know which parts are out of place.

Naturally, there are websites dedicated to the correct hanging of the Jack. Once you know what to look for it's easy enough I guess.

The red stripes of Wales are off centre.

EDIT: Looking at it, t'aint symmetrical about its vertical axis either.

How would you see if the right side is up? If you flip this picture 180 degrees then you still have the same flag ?
    Congratulations America

  5. #1115
If you flip it 180 degrees (either vertically or horizontally), you have a different flag, as below (which is correct, above is upside down ...):

The thickness of the white lines on either side of the red on the diagonals is where the difference lies.

I hate to break it to you but in image editing programs "Flip" or "Mirror" works different than rotating something. While the Union Jack isn't symmetrical about its horizontal axis or vertical axis, it is very nearly rotationally symmetrical at 180° depending on where your source image of the Union Jack is coming from...

Edit #1: In fact Wikipedia's Union Jack image is visually identical when rotated 180°. If the actual physical Union Jack shouldn't do this, perhaps this should be passed along to Wikipedia

Edit #2: The best way to visualize how "Flip" or "Mirror" works differently than Rotate in an image editing program, imagine writing a word on a piece of paper. If you then hold it up in front of a mirror it has been "Flipped" or "Mirrored" horizontally (or along the vertical axis depending on which image editing program you're using). If you want to "Flip" or "Mirror" is vertically (or along the horizontal axis), place the page perpendicular to the mirror instead of parallel. If you want to rotate something 180°, just put a finger from one hand in the middle of the page, then with your other hand put a finger in the corner and rotate the page about the first finger until your second is in a position diagonally from where it started.

Edit #3: Mirror symmetry would come into effect if you had a one sided flag and were looking at it from behind. So I'd guess you'd say you'd have it backward then? And possibly upside down?

Our flag is the same on both sides so I hadn't thought of it like that; the holes are always on one side of the flag so to have it upside down you'd have to flip it around its axis, but I get what you're saying

I can only imagine them designing it like this purposefully to enrage people who would try to fly the flag upside down to signal distress or capture as it would (I know they are different, UK/Britain) be a very British thing to do.

The First Pirates: Alright, we've captured this vessel, now lets hoist the flag down and put it back up upside down!
Still Living British Crewmen: *laugh silently to themselves*

I turned on the tv and got an orthodox Rabbinical lecture about homosexuality. It was related to New York's gubernatorial campaign. And how Paladino is the better of two evils. That it's better to be an adulterer, or send emails showing women having sex with horses, than support gay rights. That it's more important to elect a guy who will read a script to an orthodox Jewish group, followed by a public apology, than voting for personal bedroom rights.

Obviously, as flip doesn't mean rotate.

At least, I'm referring to flip in the context of flipping a burger.

Since a flag comes with holes to hang it from the flagpole with, which are only on one of the four sides, rotating it 180 degrees in a two-dimensional aspect wouldn't work, you couldn't hang it up.

Whereas flipping it about its horizontal axis, the holes are still on the same side, so can still be hung from a flagpole.

Which is why the Jack is seemingly hung upside down so often.

All right I'm going to perform some magic now. Holes are on the left side of the flag right, and you're standing with the pole on your left? Ok now side step a few feet past it so its on your right side. Can you now rotate the flag 180° to hang it up? Magic! Now for another trick, go back to where you were standing before. Flag pole back on your left side right? Walk forward a few feet then turn around 180°. The flag pole has now teleported to your right hand side! Horrors of three dimensional space what has happened here!? Egads! The holes are on the wrong side now, whatever shall we do!? You can either rotate it 180° about its vertical axis (flipping it horizontally), or rotate it about its center 180°. Magic! MIND FREAK!

Edit: Do I actually have to bust out diagrams here?

Are non-symmetric flags printed on both sides, or does the pattern just show through to the other side?

Paramount Pictures has made offers to producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott for a sequel to their 1986 feature "Top Gun," with Christopher McQuarrie eyed to update the script, New York magazine's Vulture blog reported.

Tom Cruise is expected to make an appearance as Maverick, the report said.

David Ellison, the 27-year-old son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, a trained aerobatic pilot, is a key driver of the project, according to Vulture.

He recently raised $350 million to finance films and struck a first-look deal with Paramount. The first of their film collaborations will be "Mission: Impossible IV," starring Cruise.
If they had made a sequel back then, that would have been awesome. But now? Come on. Makes no sense at all.

I forgot to pay a damn parking ticket. It was actually for having an expired inspection/emissions test sticker that was only a couple of days late. Managed to get the car inspected but forgot about the ticket. It looks like a grocery receipt and was in the bottom of my purse clutter. So I received a bench warrant for my arrest (in the mail) and a letter from a constable saying, basically, he had my name on his arrest list. For failure to pay a parking ticket in a timely manner. Yay. Too bad arresting rapists, murderers or thieves doesn't generate city revenue like auto violations does, or we'd have a pretty low victim criminal rate.

Don't you get reminders if you don't pay, before you get that?

They said a postcard reminder (threat) was sent. But I don't recall getting one. I also didn't pay much attention to the warrant letter, since it had a crooked return stamp with no name, and an address from another boro. It looked like the solicitation junk mail I get all the time. Even after I opened it, the thing looked like it could be faked. No signature, no docket number, nothing "official" looking at all. Not even our commonwealth seal printed anywhere. They didn't even spell my name correctly.

When I paid the fine at the magistrate judge's office today, I mentioned that. The constable was right there. He said most other people complained about getting a letter from a magistrate or constable, and yelled to make it look more anonymous.

A local mother claims she was kicked out of a metro Atlanta library because her toddler was making too much noise.

Serita Foster said she was at the Decatur Library on Monday when her 14-month-old started making noise.

Library staff told her to quiet him down, which she said she did. But then a staffer asked her to leave anyway, Foster said.

When she questioned why, library security called Decatur police and officers escorted her out and arrested her, she said.

“As an adult, I can take responsibility for what I do wrong, but he’s 14 months old and I can’t affect when he makes a noise,” said Foster.

The library’s director told Channel 2 Action News that Foster became boisterous after being told to leave, and that’s why they called police.

DeKalb County police said she cursed at officers, prompting her arrest.

    Foster denied cursing at anyone.

Heh, I got shocked a different way. Found a yellow envelope in my post box one morning. Sender was a court in Berlin, summoning the adressee to said court, obviously due to non-payment of debt (I got that from the name of the court).

Luckily enough, I wasn't the adressee. The stupid mail man had put the letter into the wrong post box.

Oh, the stories I could tell about the post office...
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?

In article in a dutch newspaper about the origins of cabinet members a list was given of ministers who were born as a citizen of an other country.

    1. Uri Rosenthal : Swiss
    2. Marlies Veldhuizen van Zanten - Hyllner : Sweden
    3. Gerd Leers : Limburg

For those of you who are not on the current with dutch topography, that would be like saying that somebody born in Texas isn't a US citizen.
    Congratulations America

Another Pole dead trying to walk on a highway. What is it with those Poles that they think it's safe to walk on a highway or even to cross it? So far this year 6 people got killed that way, all Poles.

    Cos Poles drink a lot?

I know in South Africa, f'rinstance, there is a huge problem with drunk men walking at the side of the road getting mowed down by passing traffic.
