He's staying on as Chariman, but stepping down as CEO... which will have less of an effect than everyone thinks, given where he focused his efforts. 'Course, once he's no longer around to impose his creative genius on Apple, well that's another issue altogether.
But no, he's not been well. I hear losing your kidneys can have that effect.

No, just stating a fact. Except I mixed it up. He got a liver transplant (June of '09), but was doing all kinds of publicity for legislation around living donor kidneys. Anyway, probably a relapse of that pancreatic cancer thing he had several years back... it often spreads to the liver. The Register is a fucking awful source. The announcement was made at 3:30PM PT, which is 6:30PM in New York. Well after markets were closed. The Telegraph sourced another Telegraph reporter who since removed that reference to the article.
Not sure if it's possible to actually suspend after-hours trading, but either way it's standard practice to announce big things when markets are closed so the markets have time to digest and sleep on things.
It does seem weird that an American would reference British sources to an American news story about an American company traded in New York.
I read it at the Telegraph but I'm British, but why would that be OG's news-source?
My sources came through reddit, as long as its in english its going to end up there. If the announcement was known ahead of time, before closing, it would make sense that the stock was suspended before the announcement.

That's wise of him to step down, that way he can play a part in grooming the next CEO a bit, as opposed to just him dying and leaving a void. A wise move, but I do hope he gets better.
Except it was not known ahead of time. That's why companies announce these things after closing.

Poor guy. It sucks that someone with so much money died, you would have expected him to be receiving top treatment and what not, but as the saying goes, money can't buy everything.

Guy might have been an ass, but the computing world wouldn't be where it is without him. Interesting to see how Apple stock will manage tomorrow, it tanked pretty hard last time his death rumor made the rounds.

And why would you? Your implication that that the value of a human life is largely determined by monetary wealth is both self-explanatory and in no need of justification or clarification.
What makes you say he was (or might have been) an ass? I didn't like his products, or his [in the end] very successful business model and IP approach, but that doesn't make him an ass... the crApple fanbois were always way worse than he was anyway.

I don't want to bleed this into how the company ran its day to day operations, I fully understand child labor isn't something that a CEO decides to start using one morning. The stuff like the patent trolling and the walled garden concept, thats all business.
but he was a very exploitative person. He even screwed over Woz before they managed to get Apple out of the garage (its mentioned in his iwoz book). One of his most famous quotes is about milking their mac to the uninformed after Microsoft won the PC war. Internally apple wasn't something to write home about either (but I admit, thats all second hand). Basically he showed 2 generations of managers that a hostile workplace is perfectly ok, and that being an asshole is a valid management style.
Not that his achievements should be ignored, he did kick start Pixar.

Alright, mostly fair enough. Though, I don't think it's accurate to say Jobs taught anyone about managing through being an asshole; I think that's a time-tested strategy that's been around for eons - as long as "managers" have existed.
